2. It's an old saying for (figuratively) committing suicide,

usually in the context of resigning from a job or other position of responsibility, especially when pressured to do so, or otherwise voluntarily taking the blame for a situation.

That's just painfully wrong on so many levels. The more appropriate phrase is that he cut and ran like the cowardly traitor he is.
