My first reaction, I admit, was pleasant surprise that the Veep stepped forth to support workers who are restoring the vandalized cemetery, but then I listened to NPR this morning.
Some Conservative gasbag, whom I decline to name, took the opportunity to stress again and again that Pence and Oberführer Bannon are on exactly the same wavelength when it comes to condemning prejudice and violence based on race, religion or ethnicity.
He said it repeatedly, rapidly, and urgently, and in so doing clanged my bullshit detector.
So here's what I figure: it would have been weird and obviously false for Oberführer Bannon to go to the cemetery, and no one would have believed the attempted illusion. So they dispatched Pence instead, asserting that he & the Oberführer are of the same mind, allowing them thereafter to insist that Bannon holds no prejudice in his heart despite making million$ and leveraging himself into the Whitehouse by doing exactly that.
Granted, although Pence would still he a horrible pseudo-human in any case, I wish I could believe that his effort here was genuine. But then I remember that nothing about this administration is genuine.

(38,958 posts)I believe the visit was already scheduled before the cemetery incident. More likely that he and the "charming" Governor simply took advantage of the photo opportunity.

(63,224 posts)It's possible that the talker this morning simply latched onto it to make Herr Bannon look more mainstream, too.

(4,834 posts)Last Night, NPR's news hour mentioned the effort to raise $90,000 by several Muslim groups, CBS did not mention the Muslim's effort at all.
There is this; http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/muslim-fundraiser-repair-jewish-cemetery-raises-100k-n724221
No link to CBS or FoxNews in first page of Google's search for Muslim funded repair.

(15,543 posts)I saw the vid clip. the KGOP wanker was trying to rake some leaves for the photo op. But he obviously has not ever worked with a rake before. He was churning out the most inefficient rake strokes I have ever seen. What a pathetic republican FAKE RAKE phony photo op.

(1,423 posts)Would have been fairly impressive and sincere had Pence actually did the work of lifting and retrieving the headstones. This was obviously a cheap photo op with the rake.
Raking those leaves would be the very, very last part of the job. First the monuments would have to be evaluated, and from the looks of the photos of the damage, most of the headstones can be saved by pouring new concrete bases.
Thank goodness for the Muslim people who paid for the work.

Good thing you tagged it as satire, since it's becoming harder to distinguish from reality with each passing day.
