When they say voter fraud, it means they want:
1) *You* to have to pay for costly documents to prove your citizenship every time you vote. How much would it cost to get a certified copy of your birth certificate? How often might they require it?
They want it to COST you money to vote, because that will stop lots of people from voting.
2) *You*, if you're married or were married or for whatever reason, have a different name now than the one on your birth certificate, will HAVE TO PAY for documents attesting to that. How much will that COST you?
They want it to COST you money to vote, because that will stop lots of people from voting.
3) They want to eliminate early voting and voting-by-mail so that you have to show up on election day and wait in long lines, taking time away from your paying job, forcing you to pay for babysitters or other folks to handle your responsibilities while you wait in line to vote, lines made longer because they become the only way to vote.
They want it to COST you money to vote, because that will stop lots of people from voting.
That's what it's all about. Making you pay for something that should be free. Even if they let you do it, if it costs you money to do it, they have taken a voting right from you by making you pay to do it.
Don't let them.

(10,252 posts)was the last time there was a poll tax in Texas. Poll taxes required that eligible voters pay between $1.50 and $1.75 to register to vote. It was a campaign to limit the vote in the 1890s and early 1900s. The poll tax was added to the Texas Constitution in 1902. The poll tax limits voting because the cost is out of reach for poor Americans. Poll taxes were ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS.

(12,415 posts)is equivalent to voting on a curve. Only works if you accept that some people are "special" and need the extra votes.

(24,773 posts)they really mean a plethora of minorities and other Democratic-leaning voters showing up at the polls.
They mean "impose a poll tax to prevent eligible voters from exercising their rights by making them pay MONEY to vote" when they say "prevent voter fraud."
Repukes think only their voters are real.

(5,813 posts)And in some other states, they have changed the documents you need in order to get a driver's license. IF you have a US passport, that will suffice along with something to prove you reside where you say you do, such as a power bill. Otherwise, you need a certified copy of your birth certificate to prove your citizenship. When I applied for a birth certificate in order to get my passport, it was $15.00 (several years ago, don't know current fee).
I witnessed many people being turned away at the driver's license office when I went in for renewal several years ago. The reason? They lacked the proper documentation and were told to come back when they had them.
The fees for the license and the documents to obtain the license would be an obstacle for many of the working poor in this country. I believe the license fee alone was close to $50.00.
There are more ways to deter potential voters than we can count. Making it difficult to obtain an acceptable government issued photo ID is one common way to thin out those you don't want to vote.
