I was and still am for a public option but now realize that the Affordable Care Act was the best we could do because of the GOP and blue dog Democrats and Lieberman. It appears to mimic the Swiss model of health care except that all companies there must be nonprofit. The kicker is what kind of subsidy structure will come in 2014.
That alternatives left if the law was struck down would probably be anarchy in health care. We would have nothing to replace this plan as imperfect as it is when compared a public option or single payer system, which we should still push for. Until most Americans accept health care as a right it will be difficult to move beyond what we have.
When you examine all the provisions of this act, it is not conceivable that it be abolished when nothing will replace it. If the GOP were to succeed in repeal and ending or gutting Medicaid and voucherizing Medicare it would leave up to half of the population with little or no access to health care. Health care would be outrageously expensive except for the richest Americans. The ultimate GOP health plan would be to end employer based health plans by ending tax subsidy and putting the population "individual plans" partly paid with health care saving accounts.
Any GOP plan would be disastrous for the population at large. And we cannot afford ANY phony plan that the GOP would put forward. Their libertarian idea is that we have to "accept" the fact that vulnerable populations would suffer and die for lack of insurance or care in a system where healing the sick is a privilege and not a right.
From my point of view their stance if a form of eugenics that is not only immoral but evil as well.
