(34,104 posts)For the first time ever, based on the snippets I heard, he actually sounded presidential. Which makes him a lot more dangerous - if he manages to keep it up, he and his dangerous ideas will be much harder to dismiss with a genteel, conciliatory face on it.
I suspect he'll destroy it by tweeting somthing stupid by morning - but for tonight they're not wrong, and that scares me more than deranged Trump.

but plenty of sniffing. NOT Presidential!
Ms. Toad
(34,104 posts)but the snippets I heard were sniff-free (and I noticed his sniffing months before it became a topic of conversation - largely because the only time I heard him was on the radio so I wasn't distracted by his gesticulating).
It is possible the rest of his speech was filled with the same trash as all of his others, but if what I heard is indicative of the entire speech, we would do well to pay attention so we are not caught off guard if he somehow manages to keep up this veneer. And pretending this was just like the rest of his trash is not an honest assessment (again, providing what I heard was indicative of the rest of the speech). It doesn't help our credibility when we refuse to distinguish rational, relatively articulate, well-delivered thoughts from his normal rants.

(7,596 posts)I want to throw up every time I see him or hear his voice.
But if managed to give a speech without idiotically bragging about how wonderful he is or mentioning inappropriate, off-topic nonsense like how many people attended his inauguration, then he hardly deserves praise for that. That's something that most human beings on this planet are capable of.
It's fucking pitiful how low a standard this sick joke of a man has to be held to.
Ms. Toad
(34,104 posts)Here's a bit I heard (delivered well) - in text form so you don't have to hear it (and it doesn't read like anything he would write, either).
On our 100th anniversary, in 1876, citizens from across our Nation came to Philadelphia to celebrate America's centennial. At that celebration, the country's builders and artists and inventors showed off their creations.
Alexander Graham Bell displayed his telephone for the first time.
Remington unveiled the first typewriter. An early attempt was made at electric light.
Thomas Edison showed an automatic telegraph and an electric pen.
Imagine the wonders our country could know in America's 250th year.
Think of the marvels we can achieve if we simply set free the dreams of our people.
Cures to illnesses that have always plagued us are not too much to hope.
American footprints on distant worlds are not too big a dream.
Millions lifted from welfare to work is not too much to expect.
And streets where mothers are safe from fear -- schools where children learn in peace -- and jobs where Americans prosper and grow -- are not too much to ask.
When we have all of this, we will have made America greater than ever before. For all Americans.
This is our vision. This is our mission.
But we can only get there together.
We are one people, with one destiny.
We all bleed the same blood.
We all salute the same flag.
And we are all made by the same God.
And when we fulfill this vision; when we celebrate our 250 years of glorious freedom, we will look back on tonight as when this new chapter of American Greatness began.
The time for small thinking is over. The time for trivial fights is behind us.
We just need the courage to share the dreams that fill our hearts.
The bravery to express the hopes that stir our souls.
And the confidence to turn those hopes and dreams to action.
From now on, America will be empowered by our aspirations, not burdened by our fears ---
inspired by the future, not bound by the failures of the past ---
and guided by our vision, not blinded by our doubts.
I am asking all citizens to embrace this Renewal of the American Spirit. I am asking all members of Congress to join me in dreaming big, and bold and daring things for our country. And I am asking everyone watching tonight to seize this moment and --
Believe in yourselves.
Believe in your future.
And believe, once more, in America.
Thank you, God bless you, and God Bless these United States.

(34,104 posts)He was coherent and, at times even eloquent. He spoke in complete, relatively well-constructed sentences without his characteristic repetition of short derrogatory insults. His tone was inclusive rather than that of an arrogant victor or a sore loser.
If I had not experienced the last month, based solely on the snippets of last night's performance I heard, I would agree with his supporter's cries that the liberals and the media are not giving him a fair chance - which is why his ability to pull off a presidential appearance is dangerous - and why it troubles me to see people say last night was just the same as every other speech he's given.
He gave a decent performance last night - and yes, his performance was presidential. Pretending it was just the same as every other incoherent, arrogant, hate-filled speech he has given damages our credibility.
That doesn't mean he is presidential, or that I think for a minute he has changed or that he wrote that speech, or that it wasn't full of lies. But he did pull off a presidential performance.

(34,104 posts)But a liar who can pull off a presidental appearance while lying is far more dangerous than one who is glaringly gutter trash.

(35,326 posts)And give him this victory
"He may have lied his ass off but you have to admit he gave a great speech." Is not a helpful approach
Ms. Toad
(34,104 posts)but last night's performance was vastly different than any he has ever given before, and we lose credibility if we continue to insist otherwise.
It is a standard practice in law when you have a few bad facts to acknowledge them and shift focus to the facts that are on your side, because when you are making arguments that don't pass the laugh test neither the judge nor the jury will believe a single word you say after that.
It doesn't give the other side a victory to acknowledge isolated bad facts - and it bolsters your credibility as to the 20 good facts you are touting when you acknowledge the single bad fact.
The bad fact for us is that he managed to appear presidential last night. If we acknowledge that, we gain credibility when we point out all of the lies in his speech - AND - that his performance last night was all political theater.

(35,326 posts)Presidential to appearing presidential
Now you're getting it
Ms. Toad
(34,104 posts)From my first comment in this thread: "he actually sounded presidential"
From my first response to you: "He gave a decent performance last night - and yes, his performance was presidential
Sounding like and performing are all about appearances.
lame54
(35,326 posts)You're tone definitely changed
Yes you used the word appearance but the context changed
Ms. Toad
(34,104 posts)Every post I've made intentionally focused on appearance (sounding, appearing, performing). That appearance includes both a decent speechwriter, who gave him material that sounds substantially more presidential than anything he has said before, and his ability to stick to the script and convey it with a more presidential bearing. I described the characteristics of the speech that made it appear more presidential - that doesn't mean it was a great speech, or that I agreed with it - it means was presented in a manner I expect of presidents, using language and tone I expect from presidents.
That's all about appearance. If we continue to insist it wasn't a better, more presidential, performance, we risk losing credibility for the attacks we need to make on both the lies and on the substantive content.

Ms. Toad
(34,104 posts)on my drive home - the fight just got harder.
And too many of us are doing the same thing Trump did after his inaugural address - fighting a losing battle against the reality that, as Perez acknowledged, last night he was a good actor. It is important to concede that point and hammer home Perez's second point: That doesn't make him a good person.

a cowering, groveling, bought off MSM who MUST lick the shoes of those who have BANNED them. No surprise from this corner of the anti-trump voters who DID NOT want the puppet of prezidents bannon and miller. They will be licking his boots even when the next WORLD WAR starts openly and without medias attempt to make the conflicts, hate and anger against us seem disconnected. PEOPLE WANT TO BE FOOLED so they can stay in their little safety bubbles built around a false sense of security that their nazis have created for the trump voter and a compliant media.
