WASHINGTON In the Obama administrations last days, some White House officials scrambled to spread information about Russian efforts to undermine the presidential election and about possible contacts between associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump and Russians across the government. Former American officials say they had two aims: to ensure that such meddling isnt duplicated in future American or European elections, and to leave a clear trail of intelligence for government investigators.
American allies, including the British and the Dutch, had provided information describing meetings in European cities between Russian officials and others close to Russias president, Vladimir V. Putin and associates of President-elect Trump, according to three former American officials who requested anonymity in discussing classified intelligence. Separately, American intelligence agencies had intercepted communications of Russian officials, some of them within the Kremlin, discussing contacts with Mr. Trumps associates.
Then and now, Mr. Trump has denied that his campaign had any contact with Russian officials, and at one point he openly suggested that American spy agencies had cooked up intelligence suggesting that the Russian government had tried to meddle in the presidential election. Mr. Trump has accused the Obama administration of hyping the Russia story line as a way to discredit his new administration.

(14,275 posts)I am anxious for this wrong to be righted too, but I look around and do not see anyone in a position of power who will do anything about it. This has left me feeling extremely pessimistic.

(9,865 posts).....this Russia story will pan out. Either because the cover-up works or because the eventual "independent investigator" will be in on the fix, or there just isn't enough clear evidence and certainly very little power to prosecute with Sessions in place.
Recent article in the New Yorker by David Remnick (not one of my favorites after that Obama fist bump cover) explains how the evidence is highly ambiguous. I agree with him that the upshot may be 45 et al mostly able to say ---"See? they plant fake stories about me". Then the real, much more important issues will be hard to expose.
Bigger than Russia are the tax returns, the mainstreaming of white supremacy, the millionaire cabinet rife with conflict of interest, the attack on the press, the misogyny.

(146,324 posts)So, the information is out there, and people have it. That should make any congressional investigations very interesting, since that material was delivered to members of Congress who sit on the committees that will be doing the investigations.
The plot slowly unfolds, and the villains will be exposed.
