College graduate job: Under 25K

For recent college grads, or parents of recent college grads -

What do you think about a job that pays under $30,000 (and that includes living expenses). Overseas/third world. Decent enough benefits. Probably not bad on the resume. Minimum requirement is bachelor's degree, master's preferred.

I know these details are slim. So here's the question: Is it worth it?

I think it is definitely worth it.

It sounds like there will be good life experience over and above what goes on the resume. If it will give a good resume line as well, and especially if there are no lucrative alternatives, it's a no-brainer.

On the other hand, if it's in a place where the person would be risking life and limb daily, consider carefully whether you want to take that risk.

Job pays $12 to $14.40/hr plus benefits (depending on whether it's 25K or 30K per year). Not bad in this economy IF it is going to provide experience that will definitely give a signficant chance of landing a desired, long-term position in the future. You say "probably not bad on the resume" which doesn't make it sound like it's that kind of strong experience. Even if it isn't, taking this job might be the right thing to do if it is a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity that this person will regret missing out on, but they should accept that they may be hurting themselves financially in the long run by taking a job way outside the mainstream. But if it's just a job that happens to be overseas, and not a must-take opportunity, then I would say look for something here in the US if that's where their future will ultimately be.

Good luck to whoever it is!
