He said in this one sentence................................. the ultimate self definition
And so maybe, rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and want to go spend hundreds of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own health care....................................
Has defined and clarified what the Republicans are and stand for.....It was what Republicans have always believed about poor people, and to hear it now in this way is totally reassuring. Callous, self-centered, knowing, and hateful. That is who they are.

(58,785 posts)that I'll copy here. The difference between RedWedge's viewpoint and Chaffetz's is itself a perfect illustration of the difference between Democratic and Republican approaches to policy:
And so maybe, rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and want to go spend hundreds of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own health care.
A smart phone is actually one of the best things a person in poverty or near poverty can have. It takes the place of a landline, library, and desktop computer. You can bank with it, check kids' grades on it, stay connected with families and friends, search and apply for jobs, make appointments, and always be reachable for callbacks on those jobs, whether you're at home or a shelter. It's a great tool for productivity -- and as Republicans cut public transportation and turn their eyes to libraries and ignore public broadband initiatives, you'd think they'd embrace the individualization and privatization of access to knowledge and bootstrapping.
A smart phone is a gadget that makes my middle-class lifestyle more efficient and convenient. For people in poverty, it's a lifeline. To attack it or offer it up as an either-or is to ignore the realities of other people's experience at best, and to continue the stupid and cruel trope of Cadillac-driving welfare queens.

So to argue against that view one must be very cagey,

Stuart G
(38,445 posts)Why?....because that defines him....He/other pukes...haven't got a clue...and more important, couldn't care less about the poor...Why?...any caring person would not say such a mean and hurtful thing..
Yes, you can get a portable phone, for about 20-30 dollars if you got to have a phone..It is not an IPhone, but a phone..with a very cheap plan that you could use for important calls...to stay in touch for emergencies. ....and for most people.., even poor people, it is must to have a phone, just to keep a job...or stay in touch with family.....Such a hurtful/stupid comment totally defines him/and his ilk, forever and forever..
He has brought this shit up to today...for his ilk, and for all to see....and we need to see them for what they are.....selfish/ self-centered assholes.........

(4,492 posts)Landlines are going the way of outdated technology such as 8-tracks. It is more expensive for a landline through the phone company than many smartphone plans. Unlimited voice/text cell plans can be found for the $30/month. There's a billboard near me that advertises a Metro PCS plan with an iPhone 7 for $35/month.
I challenge you to find a millennial who has a landline.
Thing is Chaffetz is one of the younger congresscritters. You would think that he would know the communications habit of people in his own age group. IF this were coming from a guy like John McCain (80) I could see things differently.

(901 posts)And so maybe, rather than getting suckered by Rep. Chaffetz whom they just thought worked for all citizens and had their best interests at heart, maybe they should invest in their own futures and vote the idiot out....................................

And so maybe, rather than billionaires getting another new mansion that they just love and want to go spend millions of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own country for once....................................

" in a television interview on August 12, 2012, He claimed that women who were the victims of what he described as "legitimate rape" rarely experienced pregnancy from rape".....and Todd never totally apologized for that...(he sort of apologized a few days later)...but..............
In a book published in July 2014, Akin said that he regretted apologizing and defended his original comments.
