I agree with everything you said. NATO has enjoyed broad bipartisan support and deservedly so. DemocratSinceBirth Mar 2017 #12

The same isolationist fever that is affecting us is affecting them.

They just completed an agreement on military cooperation with Germany. So, if anything, they seem to be working more closely with other European military powers -- perhaps because they see a need for the Europeans to strengthen NATO by themselves.

And as long as therer is a threat to the Atlantic Alliance there is no reason to think the Britain or any other European country will pull out.

I love the idea of the EU and especially love being able to go from one foreign country to the other with no border hassle. But I think we too often confuse the two when we talk about Eurosceptic politicians. The EU may well go back to being more of a common market like I remember it in the 70's. And NATO was very strong then. Granted, France was out of the fold, but they have always had one of the most muscular defense standings in Europe and they are also a Nuclear power.

No one should deny EU has some real structural problems and there is a chance that it has become something that it's member nations are not comfortable with. Even my most socialist friends look upon the bureaucracy in Brussels with distain. And while the Euro works great for us when we travel to Europe, especially like now when the rates are great, there is still a real question if Europe can really make it without each nation being able to dictate their own fiscal and monetary policy.

I do not doubt that some of the trump cabal would love to go full Russia ally and abandon NATO. Especially Tillerson and the Grim reaper Bannon who love them for their repressive religious tendencies. But there is no way in hell even 5 republican Senators would support that. In fact, if he starts trying to pull out of NATO it will threaten his presidency.

I may well be proved wrong as I often am, but I sure hope not.

Defending liberal democracy is a noble cause. I based my belief that NATO might have to think about a future without the U K and U S A on the rationale that if the U K can turn its back on the EU it can turn its back on NATO. Right wing populism is an infection that is poisoning the western liberal democracies.
