Email I got from a friend about ACA...(here in the deep south)

Yeah – one of our big lovable redneck friends stopped by last night – I had the news on – he was saying, “Can you believe they passed that?!” I said, “YES – I can.” He looked flabbergasted and grunted…I said, “Have you taken the time to read the major bullet points of the plan?” He said, “NO – all I know it’s going to cost us a bunch of money!!” I said, “IT ALREADY DOES!!” You’re paying for all these folks who don’t have coverage and/or can’t afford to pay their healthcare bills – those who default - whether you want to or not!! We write off THOUSANDS of dollars a day!! This is why healthcare is so expensive! And just ‘cause you have health coverage doesn’t mean your plan pays 100%. He was like, “Oh – I guess you’re right.” I told him this will create competition within the private sector if the gov’t expands the Medicaid system to offer affordable health plans. . .AND for those who still can’t/don’t want to pay for insurance – and chance ER visits – they will be paying a tax/penalty to “put money in the pot” to HELP cover their arse when they use a health services.

Rick had to defend this plan to his own Dr. yesterday – Dr. Hogan – young thing. . .Dr. Hogan said, “Oh BUT I’ll be forced to take these people!” I told Rick, “YET, another doctor who has no idea of what he’s talking about!!” He does NOT to have to accept any Medicaid/Medicare patients if he doesn’t want to. A LOT of doctors have no clue nor do they care (in a hospital setting particularly) about the business side of healthcare – as long as they are getting paid they’re pro/physician fees. . .they could care less!

THANKS for defending the issue!!! Tell them folks to EDUCATE themselves on the issue and DON’T let the conservatives be fear mongers.

We have to create revenue somehow in this country – if they don’t start making the folks who make over $250K a year pay their fair share in taxes – we’ve got to do something!!

A conservative was spouting off the usual talking points. In this case it was this unprecedented expansion of Medicare is going to give us the biggest tax increase in history.

I started by asking if the poster had read the ACA, indicating that I have read about 60% of it. I calmly stated that I had not seen in the bill any significant increase in Medicare other than fixing the donut hole that Bush created in Part D. Further I said there is no tax increase to anyone provided they follow the law. Individuals that don't fall into one of the exemptions must carry minimum health insurance or pay a fee that is collected as a tax. Companies with more than 50 FT employees that don't fall into one of the exemptions must provide health insurance or pay a fee that is collected as a tax. But I was very interested in understand what I had missed in my reading so far or if that was in a part of the bill I hadn't read. I invited the poster to educate me.

His next post, not addressing my question, was that Kagan should have recused herself. My response was I was disappointed he had not answered my question because I wanted to learn about this supposed unprecedented expansion of Medicare and this huge tax increase on everyone. I pointed out that Thomas was asked to recuse himself because his wife worked for the Heritage Foundation, had taken over $600K in salary from them as she was a spokesperson against the bill. So there was more than enough "conflict of interest" charges to go around. But asked again to be educated.

His next response was well Kagan, Sotomoyor and Ginsburg should have recused themselves. Again not providing any reason.

My response was that the Court had issued the decision and that I could not imagine any set of circumstances under which the Court would take any action, or perhaps legally could, to reverse the decision based on post-decision assertions of conflicts of interest. But that I was very interested in these Medicare/tax claims. I said I was sure he had his copy sitting here just as my copy was sitting on my desk.

His next and final response was to to the usual, born in Kenya, socialist, tax huggers, freeloaders and then he threw in racial slurs.

The moderator immediately told the poster since he had gone over the line all his posts would be moderated before being posted to the blog.

My response to the racist post was that I was disappointed that the poster whose screen name had something to do with "truth", had not stepped forward to educate me. I said I was hoping to engage in some actual dialogue based on facts and not talking points. I said that while I didn't believe his assertions were true that I would change my mind if he could just educate me.

He never posted again yesterday unless I missed it. Perhaps all his posts were exploding visceral hurls of hatred and racism and the moderator simply deleted the posts.

But yes when you ask them for facts to back up their claims they never have them. If you engage them calmly and rationally that seems to make them go even more nuts.

So many times their rants go unanswered. When someone does challenge them you see the shallowness of their opinion.
Your responses were very well done. Thanks again!

If you really answer their questions they toss out more questions. When you answer those they toss more, each time they are proven to not know what they are talking about.
The socialist and Kenyan born claims are an attempt to hide there true feelings, then if pushed the race care slip out.
I know many who have caught themselves just before uttering the "N" word.

It is useless to argue with these anti-American repigs. You can answer 95% of their questions, and they'll just keep moving the goal posts. That is their preferred way to "debate". Change the subject.

The best way to put it: arguing with a repig is like playing chess with a pigeon. He'll shit all over the board, upset the pieces, and fly away declaring "VICTORY!"

I used to try to reason with these dopes, but after one long and drawn out back-n-forth, in which he mercifully hadn't moved the goal posts, and acknowledged my evidence & links (and his lack of evidence for his side), the "reasonable" repig (rare creature, BTW) ended by posting this:

"You've proven your position, but I just choose to believe the opposite".

I am NOT making this up, and this is an accurate recounting of the incident. Now I dont' waste time with these sheep, just mock them.

However, the gun-religionists on DU still amuse me with their twisted spin & mis-logic, so I engage them.

and sadly now it's clear that reading and critical thinking is not in fashion in the USA.

I realize talking to a lot of teabaggers is like trying to reason with a hallucinating schizophrenic, but there are always those who are just low info voters who have only be listening to MSM. The election will be decided by those people. And we have to try to reach them.

There is SO much ignorance to overcome with this issue -- and the ACA is only the beginning of true reform.
