‘There’s a smell of treason in the air’: Historian Douglas Brinkley analyzes ‘mind-boggling’ Comey hearing
Brad Reed
21 Mar 2017 at 07:59 ET

Monday’s House Intelligence Committee hearing with FBI Director James Comey is still causing shock waves throughout the political world, and historian Douglas Brinkley believes that it’s an unprecedented moment in American politics.

Speaking with the Washington Post, Brinkley said he could not ever recall a time when a senior federal law enforcement official publicly confirmed a major criminal investigation into the campaign of a sitting president.

“There’s a smell of treason in the air,” Brinkley said. “Imagine if J. Edgar Hoover or any other FBI director would have testified against a sitting president? It would have been a mind-boggling event.”

Brinkley went on to say that he has never seen a new president grow so unpopular so quickly, as Trump’s low approval ratings combined with the FBI’s investigation into his campaign’s ties with Russia have created massive storm clouds hanging over his presidency.

“This is the most failed first 100 days of any president,” he said. “To be as low as he is in the polls, in the 30s, while the FBI director is on television saying they launched an investigation into your ties with Russia, I don’t know how it can get much worse.”

He wrote the text to an American history course I took at community college a few years ago. Great book - not the usual "Presidents, battles and generals" approach to history. Every topic was approached with how the event or era affected women, minorities, Native Americans, farmers, young people, as well as "regular white men." I still refer to the book sometimes.

The actual facts will be way worse than this preliminary information. WTF would Drumpf have a server that directly connected to a bank in Russia in his headquarters there unless there was some major infamy going on? Why would so many people be having serial conversations and visits with Russia on an ongoing basis, both before and after the election? The way he's attacking our friends and praising our enemies is also proof of him being Putin's puppet. Just waiting to see if the FBI actually does this job or if it's just a front to hide drumpfs real illegal activities. We know they absolutely didn't want this to come out based on the difference of treatment between Drumpf and HRC, the traitors. Question is will Nunes be able to suppress and divert from drumpfs treachery? If so, we absolutely have to have a special prosecutor.

They have detention camps set up now. From a report earlier this month, the word was - there are 3500 beds now. But the estimation of "need" is now 20-thousand. And they've already considered separating kids from their parents. Remember that one?

I only saw one post about this in my FB feed yesterday. Maybe people are getting scared to discuss politics on FB. I think it is huge news though. I'm interested how this will end and how it will be presented in history books. Hopefully, I will still be alive say 30 to 40 years from now to see. I better start eating better so I'll still be around. I've gotten into some bad diet habits to cope with all the stress from that election and now this Trump presidency.

this can much worse... war, further attacks on our democracy, international relations, etc.... no doubt the egg is hanging all over his face but I still have reservations that Comey will actually pull together a detailed investigation into Trump. At some point the proverbial poo needs to hit the fan and spray all over the GOP party. Here's hoping to that moment.

There are many, many possibilities that tRump will inflict a whole bunch more misery on the citizens in this country and perhaps people around the world. There can be much more suffering ahead before this asshole is removed from office. He and Bannon are intent on destroying the USA, each for their own very different reasons. They will continue on that quest until forced to stop. The historic implications are mind boggling!

As for tRump and his cohorts (co-conspirators), they can anticipate a whole lot more misery ahead as this unfolds in all of its treasonous details. tRump who so highly prizes his name will get to see the destruction of his empire and his name will forever be linked with TREASON. Please hurry the day when tRump equals treason in the minds of everyone, including those who so gleefully voted for that bastard.

as a main interest? Someone has finally said the T word.

If these things had come out about Obama, there is no way I would have steadfastly supported him, in light of the lies, the links with a foreign enemy, appointments of foreign agents to run our security agency, etc. No way.

When Robert Duvall as Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now, said, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

Well,

I love the smell of impeachment of Trump at all times during any day that we're lucky enough to have it happen.
