Reince Preibus apparently didn't know (or didn't care) that it wasn't permitted for him to contact the FBI Director directly. It's not surprising that they wouldn't have a clue about the extent or scope of the FBI's inquiry, or any of the details. President of the United States isn't an entry level job.
