Trump supporters husband getting deported despite being a model resident

An Indiana woman who voted for President Donald Trump last year is trying to stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement from deporting her husband.
Indiana Public Media reports that Roberto Beristain a resident of Granger, Ind., and owner of the popular Eddies Steak Shed restaurant is scheduled to be deported on Friday despite pleas from both his family and local government officials.
Beristain tells IPM that he came to the United States from Mexico City illegally in 1998, but later obtained documentation to work in the country and checked in with ICE each year. Beristain was detained in February during one of his regular check-ins with ICE, despite the fact that the agency had known of his immigration status for more than a decade and, up until that point, had done nothing.
Beristains wife, Helen, says that she voted for Trump in November because she supported his policies on deporting undocumented immigrants. However, she tells IPM that she never expected her own husband to be caught up in a deportation wave.
{Trump} did say the good people would not be deported, the good people would be checked, she explained.
Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of nearby South Bend, Ind., has been working to stop Beristains deportation, as he says the restaurant owner has been a model resident during his time in Indiana.

(81,883 posts)But why isn't he legal if they're married? They never went through the process?

(11,752 posts)Marriage doesn't automatically put you into the process for legalization. Often you have to leave the country before the process can start and then for people from Mexico, it can take up to 10 years to be allowed to come back in. President Obama's orders to ICE told them not to target people who had not been in problems with the law, and basically offered a probation like check in system for undocumented people while they figured out what to do. Trump's new orders blew that up and opened everything to the discretion of ICE. They are going for the low hanging fruit to get the numbers up to show they are doing something. People coming in for their check in are the easiest.

(18,672 posts)I'm so sick of conservatives. I've known way too many who complain about "illegals" (their words) and "freeloaders" but when they get fired or injured they're the first people in line with both hands out. I have zero sympathy for people like this. I just wish their self-inflicted suffering were limited to them alone instead of everyone else having to pay for their willful ignorance.

(11,752 posts)When you cast a wide net you are going to catch a lot of fish, dolphins, turtles, etc...
These people who supported Trump thought that he was going to craft some sort of hyper-selective policy to "only target the bad ones" while leaving the "good ones" alone? How do you even do that? President Obama faced a lot of pressure on the DACA policy and selective enforcement orders he gave to ICE. He was trying to cast a line and people who weren't doing anything harmful (drugs, gangs, violence, etc...) still got caught up. He was essentially trying to line fish for Tuna and would catch his number of dolphins and turtles. Trump ordered ICE to trawl and his supporters are upset because their people are getting caught.
The immigration system is broken and has been for decades. Republicans have never wanted to fix it. Their solution has always been to just keep people out, but not really because their industry buddies and donors need exploitable labor to make more profit and we like the low prices so nobody really did anything to actually fix the situation. Trump voters, being driven by their own fears and prejudices, were eager to believe that he had some kind of magical solution to the problem. My wonder is why they would believe a person who had knowingly used and abused undocumented workers and who has general disdain for anyone that he feels is not on his level of status and wealth (which to Trump is almost everyone). I answered my own question in the sentence prior, but it is the thing that is most irritating. I knew that Bernie Sanders, President Obama, and Hillary Clinton were never going to get everything they wanted to do accomplished, but I believed that they were going to try to do what they said they would. Trump supporters voted for the idiot thinking he wasn't "really" going to do some of the things he promised and they read into a lot of what he said to fit into their perspectives. Now they are seeing the results.
I feel bad for Mr. Beristain. Hopefully Mrs. Beristain learned something about trusting Trump and the GOP, but probably not.
