General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you know what "Ate up" is?
I can't say I'd heard of until I was in the Army. I posed this as a general question in case it's common knowledge.
Being "Ate up" is a nasty state. Watching someone go through it is truly painful.
What is it?
"Ate up" is a mental place where a person screws up then is so worried about that mistake they don't focus on the next thing aaaand they screw that up. They are so scared of punishment that it's all they think about. One small mistake followed by another and another.... Often they go back and try to fix two or three errors ago.
There are degrees of it too. There's "Ate up" and then there's "Ate the ____ up".
It's really horrible to see as I said. The remedy is one small easy task followed by reward, repeat.
Trump appears to be Ate up.
The tweet to instruct people to watch the lady on Fox last night seems to be him trying to continue fighting getting caught in the wire tapping lie, as I read on another thread. He's screwing up repeatedly and trying to correct two or three screwups ago.

(182,879 posts)I was going to add this as an edit but I'll put it here.
First - we are really vulnerable. If something large were to happen we are basically leaderless. If something requiring military action the brass would have to make some decisions with little or no civilian influence. I trust them but our structure requires civilian oversight. Mattis would weigh largely in such a situation.
Second - Bannon spent 8 years in the Navy. They may have an equivalent, I don't know. He may want Trump this way or he may have another angle. Trump doing the Keystone signing Friday morning looked a lot like the remedy I mentioned in the OP.

(182,879 posts)Everything just changed and then you get Ate up. It was almost always a matter of the fellow lower ranks to build them back up. The only beating I saw in basic was a guy who got Ate up without us knowing it. Totally internal. He screwed up big and ..... myself and the other shithouse lawyers who ran the platoon stepped outside for a few minutes.

Trump is ate up about Trump. If it's not about him or what he values, it doesn't exist.

To be obsessively enthralled.
To be single mindedness about problems or difficulties to the point of blowing them out of proportion in accordance with reality.
