Trumps immigration crackdown chalked up another casualty today, and it may have all been a big mistake.
A 53-year-old Chicago man was shot in the arm by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents attempting to make an arrest after they burst into his home at 6:20 a.m. in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the citys Northwest side, according to the Chicago Tribune.
ICE put out a statement saying that they shot Felix Torres because he aimed a weapon at them. The ICE Office of Professional Responsibility will review the case.
However, there are conflicting reports. Torres daughter told NBC 5 Chicago that her father didnt own a gun and that the ICE agents never identified themselves. They were apparently trying to arrest Torres son, also a legal resident.
Torres daughter said her father and everyone else in the house, which included eight people from three generations of the family, were in the U.S. legally. That was confirmed by a group called the Peoples Response Team who said, the family has lived in the home for at least 30 years.
The wounded man was taken to a local hospital listed in serious condition.
The Chicago Police were not involved in the ICE raid, but have now put Torres and his son into custody while they investigate.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has declared Chicago a sanctuary city, but ICE can still conduct raids, and is supposed to communicate and coordinate what they are doing with the local police. In this case, police are still investigating.
It appears that, once again, a family in the U.S. legally who were longtime residents of a neighborhood were targeted in one of the immigration raids that have ramped up since Trump took office promising a crackdown on illegal immigrants who are criminals.
There is still an investigation to be done, but this appears to be another incident of overreach by ICE fueled by Trumps anti-immigrant policies.

(19,240 posts)by claiming "They had a gun"? I seem to recall that the LAPD tried to bust Bush Senior for Contra-Cocaine but messed it up.
Do ICE agents have protection against local prosecution? If so, what is to stop them from running their own Russian Mob enforcement operation in which they target people for expulsion/assassination for money--knowing that the Russian Mafia backed DOJ will back them if they get caught?
Is there anyone in organized crime who would have wanted the son dead? Recall that ICE arrested a woman as she was about to testify against her abusive lover. The lover tipped off ICE and got them to arrest her in order to protect himself. Lots of quid pro quo going on around here. How do we know that money isn't changing hands? Maybe ICE is now an organized racket in itself.

(1,097 posts)I'm sorry, but I've been burned by stories from Occupy Democrats before. I would not be surprised if this happened, but the source is too dodgy for me to share on Facebook and Twitter. The Chicsgo Tribune story they link simply does not corroborate the story Occupy Democrats are putting out.
Thanks!

(1,097 posts)What the major news sources are reporting is far more ambiguous and leave much doubt as to the veracity of the claims made by Occupy Democrats. Yes, ICE should have never been there in the first place, but law enforcement makes errors like that all the time. If they had a warrant, as they claim, and if Torres pulled a gun on them, as they claim, the shooting was justified.
Because there are two stories and no hard evidence to back up either, I am not inclined to take what Occupy Democrats is saying with anything more than a grain of salt.

(1,097 posts)Warrants are issued for the wrong houses all the time. It happens. Law enforcement enforcing a warrant and facing a threat of deadly force, regardless of whether or not that warrant would be later dismissed due to errors, are fully within their power to use deadly force in answer to the threat.
The legitimate news sources reported the warrant was for a person other than Torres. The legitimate news sources say that Torres had a gun. If he indeed answered the door brandishing the gun, the shooting was completely legitimate.
Occupy Democrats has a history of pulling shit out of their ass and reporting it as news. I'll wait for a real news source one this.

(16,199 posts)The aspects of "castle doctrine" defense shootings of officers are complex, but people have been released without charges. This is the inherent problem of violently smashing into the homes of the most armed citizenry in the world. The offensive aspect here is the officers appeared to be after the son, who is a US citizen. They have no authority over US citizens.
Personally, I oppose violent entry raids of homes, particularly for non-violent criminal warrants, and have absolutely no problem if an officer is killed doing so. It's the price a tyrant pays for not respecting freedom.

Torres said ICE agents told her they were after one of her brothers, who is a U.S. citizen. She denied that her father had a weapon.
"My dad doesn't got no guns. My dad just went to see what's going on and that's why they shot him. He just opened the door and they shot him," Torres said.

I really dont know what [ICE agents] were doing there, and I dont think they do either, attorney Thomas Hallock said. Its bizarre.
The shooting happened about 6:15 a.m. at the home in the 6100 block of West Grand, authorities said.

"My dad doesn't have any guns, my dad just went to see what's going on," Torres said. "He just opened the door and they just shot him."
