(42,737 posts)That's because there were no FCC rules governing Internet privacy until the FCC adopted them in late October and those rules have not gone into effect and, once the repubs (who dissented from the adoption of those rules) took control of the FCC there was no chance those rules ever would go into effect.
This sucks, of course.

Your ISP can sell every piece of info it can gather... to anyone & everyone.....
Cambridge Analytica profiles social media users
Ads & news stories are tailored to your habits & preferences
That means that lots of "back doors" exist...
Providing access for programs having legitimate objectives as well as those having nefarious ones.
When selling other people's personal data is profitable & has no real oversight because it is legal.... there will be no limit to the types of information being "acquired".
The recent trends in SMART everthing have opened up the door for unlimited data collection by service providers & hackers alike....
Unfortunately.... all the big players in 45's Kremlin Klan are as heavily invested in technology/ telecommunications/ cyber infrastructure as they are Oil & Real Estate....
so now not only are we subject to mass coercion via social media bots commandeering the newsfeeds convincing authentic media outlets to unknowingly report biased/fake info.
we will also soon be subject to individual attacks on our bank accounts, investment / retirement accounts , property ownership records, tax histories, insurance/medical histories, energy/water consumption records, billing & credit accounts.....
When there is no transparency & no regulatory oversight, it is only a matter of time before all of the various "service providers" are owned by just a few well connected oligarchs.....
capable of invasion, disruption, and asset seizure anywhere in the world ... from the comfort of their luxury yachts.
