My Trump voting sister went to an Indivisible event today

After a few months of Trump she has seen the error of her ways. The rest of the family didn't beat her up too much after the election and we all left the door open for her to regain her sanity. My daughter invited her to come today. It was a good day.

The "deplorable" comment pushed her over the edge. She is not a college grad and struggles to stay at lower middle class. She felt like that tag was meant for her. I tried to explain that it wasn't directed at her but the damage was done.

the magic of the "deplorable" tag is that it made Hillary sound elitist while she harshly alienated some voters.

Fortunately, many Trump voters can now clearly see the difference between Trump's rhetoric and his actual performance.

Many on this site object to Bernie Sanders speaking of Trump voters as if they are human beings, but I think he is showing the way.

He is speaking to a subset of Trump voters. You don't persuade voters by calling them "deplorables".

As Lincoln said

"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

Bernie is trying to reconnect with some Trump voters and their "better angels"

"Some people think the people who voted for Trump are racists and sexists and homophobes and deplorable folks. I don’t agree, because I’ve been there.”

Again, if he didn't see the racism, sexism and homophobia among other deplorable characteristics of Trump voters then that is on him. If he did see it but would prefer to deny it to engage wwc voters then he is pandering.

POC, immigrants, women, LGBT, minorities are all part of the Democratic coalition that is required to win. If Bernie is under the impression that marginalizing this coalition while centering wwc is a winning strategy he didn't learn a damn thing from the primary.

Continuing to alienate Trump voters is NOT a winning strategy in 2018.

...the Republican Party. Preaching to the choir does not win hearts and minds in the general population.

Bernie is attacking Trump as a racist and a liar. He is saying to people who voted for Trump that they are not racist.

It would make no sense for Bernie to say that some are racist and some are not. He is giving them the benefit of the doubt.

That gives them the psychological freedom to separate themselves from Trump and rethink their voting (and thinking) patterns.

your all or nothing viewpoint on Trump voters doesn't seem to allow for the fact that a significant number are not Racist/Sexist/Homophobic.

When people tell me thus, I say, us liberals were called America and god hating scumbags for half a decade for opposing Iraq, we didn't elect Pauly Shore POTUS.

along with just "aw, I don't want to talk about that stuff." Go back to making sex, politics, and religion taboo subjects.

It makes people a lot easier to get along with and takes the pressure off them to eat crow if they were wrong about something, like voting for an orange boor who didn't know his thumb from his bum when it came to government.

My six sisters and two brothers....a civil war has ignited with this election. My younger sister no longer wants ANYTHING to do with my older sisters. I have had hostile emails bounced between myself and two older sisters. Another older sister is manic depressive, and nobody wants anything to do with her, as she's irrational and an ugly attitude to deal with on many subjects. My older brother is worthless, and no longer speaks to any of the younger siblings....5 of us.

dRumpf has broken the fragile link between myself and many in my family. I honestly don't care if I ever speak to my oldest four siblings. One is mentally unstable, one has alienated himself from us, and two are staunch dRumpf supporters and think it's all about "Hillary lost...get over it."

It's not a pretty family any longer. Such a shame, as we were one big happy family for so many years when we were all raising our families...when Nixon, Carter and Reagan were presidents. Then it went south...after Bill got his blow job, which shouldn't be news, it seems to have opened a crevice that has split the family apart ever since. dRfumf was the last straw.

Sad ending to a good family.
