And I think they're spoiling for a war with NK.

With Jared Kushner in charge.

Sure makes me feel safe that our national security
is in such good hands.

We're talking about escalation of tensions in the ME
and NK, with the very real possibility of a draft and
a nuclear war.

Term referring to bloggers, generally right-wing, who enthusiastically support war, destruction, and mayhem from the safety of their home.

Germany had a two-fold draft: military service or civil-service.

You got your drafting papers, you went for a preliminary physical check-up to a military doctor. And then you would normally have joined military service, except if you made a special application to go to civil-service instead. (And unless you would have been a great, athletic soldier to begin with, the military didn't put up a fight to keep you. There were always enough recruits.)

Military service was shorter and the pay was better. Military tours abroad were optional for the draftees. (Higher pay, but risk to be sent into an actual warzone one day.)

Civil service was longer and the pay was worse. You would take care of elderly, disabled and kindergartners, but mainly the bodily hard parts of the job where using an actual nurse would be a waste of her talents.
(The 18yo pot-smoking "Zivi" working as a nurse in a hospital was a cultural meme.)

And the civil-service is the reason why I think a draft is a good idea. Working with the elderly and the disabled shapes your character.

placing in harms way. There is no time to discuss items of civil service or should women be part of a draft.

IMO, we are walking into global war on two fronts without any idea what we are doing.

We won't need a draft for wars anymore because we don't throw boots at wars anymore. Wars are fought with drones, billion dollar technology, and an elite special forces.

A draft in order to rebuild the infrastructure is the same in my eyes as using prison workers to make goods or clear the roadways of garbage, its slavery.

If we want to rebuild the infrastructure it's going to take taxes to pay contracts of companies that bid on jobs.

If you want to restart the CCC and OFFER jobs to those who can't find work but want to work, that's fine, but we can't force citizens in the Land of the Free to do work when taxes should be raised to pay for it through traditional means.

There is no fucking justification for forcing military service on anyone. I know the argument, and it doesn't outweigh the atrocity of 1. Forcing anyone into any kind of labor (indentured servitude/slavery) or 2. Forcing someone to learn to, and possibly, kill other human beings.

My sons are too old now, but my grandson graduates from high school in a year. If there were a draft, I'd go underground with him in a heartbeat, without a second thought. I'd do the same for and with any young person.
