Another hard-fought election win -- with newly re-elected Tom Cauley - Village of Hinsdale President. Hinsdale fortunate to A) have a leader who is fighting to protect the community from poorly planned Illinois Tollway expansion, and B) to have one of the classiest McDonald's in the Western Hemisphere. Congratulations again Tom - it was a true pleasure working with you.

(58,677 posts)It's these local races we need to win for now. Good boost on the way to 2018. I'm not even joining in on any 2020 discussions yet.

(23,272 posts)We call our group the Progressives of Kane County (750 strong now on FB) and have been meeting monthly since his campaign office closed.
We researched which offices to target and then went running, Dundee Supervisor, the Elgin board, Batavia City Clerk etc - all from our Bernie group and all 15 of our candidates won yesterday!!
It's been crazy these last 2 weeks but sooo worth it!

(70,172 posts)turned out. not sure about party there.

(59,591 posts)These included property tax increases for flood control, general infrastructure, including a LOT of sidewalk and street repair, dedicated eco-devo funding for the urban core.
The gob-smacker, though - dropping simple marijuana possession to a $25 fine misdemeanor.
About $700 million in GO bonds in total.

(65,114 posts)So many workaday folks there and been deep red since before Reagan. When they went red, there were 6,000 people in Naperville and now there's a 100k. Didn't exactly "citify" that crowd. Might as well be Decatur.
mopinko
(70,172 posts)kane county aint what it used to be, either. but....
ProfessorGAC
(65,114 posts)Aurora seems to be "citifying" more than Naperville, and that city has gotten bit like Joliet. Will County was far more purple in November than in the past.

(16,375 posts)Things are changing fast around here.
ProfessorGAC
(65,114 posts)Glad to hear that. Seeing Will moving that way too. I think having so much of the east part of the county not just being farmland anymore is changing things.
hedda_foil
(16,375 posts)Instead of small semi-rural villages with less educated/worldly residents, the population of the western burbs has transformed into predominantly college grads with a much less constricted view of the world.

(641 posts)One school tax increase (which passed) and local (and I do mean local) elections. A newcomer *almost* beat an entrenched local - he only lost by five (UGH) votes. My neighborhood (which probably accounts for 40% of the tax base in our township) had close to 90% of those eligible vote. I'll be visiting the two neighbors who I know are not registered. Upside is the newcomer will continue to attend the monthly meetings and I intend to join him. The days of no available minutes are going to be over. As are the days of using designated money (read: roads) for other projects. My township had 38% turnout. While not high enough, is far better than most "off year" elections.
I signed up to be an election judge last summer when the newspaper ran an article on the shortage of election judges. I proudly did same day registration last fall. I registered mostly 18-19 year old first time voters. While not all may have voted for whom I hoped, at least they voted. And I also made it known to the right people that some judges who signed up to do same day registration stated aloud they did NOT think same day registration was right over and over during our training class!. Too bad, the law is the law.
While the 2016 federal election results sucked, I do think it awoke the sleeping tiger. And s/he is now out, bearing teeth and fangs.

(81,389 posts)Thank you for the report, mopinko! That's a really encouraging sign!
That's exactly what our party needs to be doing now, all over the place! Grabbing the grassroots and taking as many local elections as we can! Because from there, you build. From there, you BUILD. THIS is how we build - our own party infrastructure AND our farm teams for future bench strength.
Those local elections are hatcheries for bright new future Democratic leaders. SOOOO important! The CONS have known this for 40 years. We have a LOT of catching up to do! But results like these are a mighty good start!
i think this is the most popular thread i have ever had.
really glad it didnt sink!
