A CNN host was left speechless Wednesday morning after a Republican congressman responded to a plea from a Syrian girl for help by defending President Bashar al-Assad.
Appearing on At This Hour with Kate Bolduan, Rep. Tom Massie (R-KY) pushed back at a call from Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to intervene in Syria after a horrific chemical weapon attack in Khan Sheikhoun.
Well, you know, we had testimony from a military expert in front of Congress that said thats a virtual act of war in Syria, and that we would be at war with the Russians at that point. I think its a bad idea, Massie explained.
Host Bolduan then showed Massie a clip of 7-year-old Bana Alabed, who has documented the horrors of the Syrian war on Twitter, asking for help and saying, I want to stop the war, and I want the children of Syria play and go to school, live in peace. We can we can help them. Together, we can save them.
To be clear, what she said right there is thats all she wants, Bolduan explained. She wants for the children of Syria to play and go to school. Shes pleading for help. What do you say to her, congressman?

(12,663 posts)He is exactly the type of person he is. He's a conservative/authoritarian whose self-worth is determined by his tribal identity.
He won't see himself as part of a greater community, because that would mean he's just the same as everyone else would be; the advantages and privileges he holds as one of the "elders" of his tribe would not be in effect.
To authoritarian tribal thinkers, other people's value in society is determined by their place in the local hierarchy, and their children carry that same value.
Why should he care what happens to people far away from his clan, if it doesn't affect his lifestyle? Their lives, their children, their environment is disposable, insofar as he would actually be concerned.
A typical child in Syria has no more meaning - no more emotional connection - to him as a typical child in a fairy tale he heard when he was growing up would.
Political issues are pretty much all just philosophical exercises that are part of "his job" - which he would gladly engage in if the issue didn't cost him and his peers any actual money.
The Scorpion depends on the Frog to buy what he's selling and believe things will somehow be different, totally ignoring the Scorpion's track record and very nature.
Why should we be surprised by what Congressman Massie actually stands for?
Aghast, yes - but we all know what sort of sociopath he can be. And we should call him out for it every time he shows his true colors.
