Why Trump's Meeting with Xi will go badly...

Donald Trump fancies himself the ruler of the most powerful nation on Earth. He is a stupid man, who will not consult with anyone about the protocols of this meeting with the head of state of China. Xi is the leader of the nation with the highest population of any nation on this planet. Economically, China is now in a position to control many of the raw materials and manufactured items used throughout the world. China doesn't care about the environmental issues involved with mining and has enormous resources from which to draw.

If Donald Trump, as he typically does, attempts to act in a bullying way with Xi, he is likely to hear something like this, from a man who is not a stupid man at all:

"President Trump, I am also the leader of one of the most powerful nations on Earth. You will not instruct me on what I must do or not do with regard to North Korea or any other issue. This meeting has ended."

President Trump's complete lack of diplomacy is likely to end in an ugly impasse in any meeting with Xi.

to the very different negotiating styles typical of China. Xi will not be cowed by the idiot, Trump. Not a chance. Trump will blunder badly, because he has no knowledge of how to proceed. I predict a poor outcome from this meeting.

Clawing your way up from there politically is the hard part.

And it should be noted that the Chinese ruling elite abounds in people who spent many years studying biology, chemistry, engineering, IT, mathematics, agronomy, physics and much, much more, as opposed to lawyers and "business leaders".

I'd give a lot to thought-stream Xi and his senior aides during the meetings.

I work with a Chinese man regularly in my business. In fact, he is my primary client. I've learned some things from him over the past 10 years, and we often discuss differences between the culture he grew up and and our culture here. He emigrated to the US after the Tiananmen Square incident, when he was in his 20s. He's a naturalized citizen here, now, and has a good command of English.

We often attend meetings with potential clients together. His business negotiating skills have improved in the 10 years we have been associated, but he still misses a lot of things during those negotiations. His style tends to be a bit abrupt, and he has no patience with the small talk that generally oils the wheels of such meetings. I serve as a sort of buffer, really. I'm not the leader of such negotiations, because it is his company, not mine. I am just a contractor for it. I write all of the content of the websites we're selling to those businesses. We've lost a few jobs due to his odd presentation and negotiating style. It is very different from ours.

Trump is the essential big American business type. He tends to railroad things when negotiating. That works very poorly with Chinese leaders. Very poorly, indeed.

"For Xi, golf is just such a touchy topic back home, saddled with so much baggage -- the optics would be awful, with or without Trump," said Dan Washburn, author of "The Forbidden Game: Golf and the Chinese Dream," a book on the tumultuous history of golf in China.

"It's a symbol of the corruption Xi has been railing against," he added. "It represents a lot of the things he has spent much of his presidency fighting, so it's hard to envision the government embracing the game any time soon -- at least publicly."...ĺmore)

to be very important. Since this meeting was thrown together quite recently, it is likely that the careful protocols observed by previous administrations (planned months in advance) will be disregarded. We have no functioning State Department, which in a normal administration would take care of such things, so SCROTUS and his clueless minions are likely to behave boorishly, as usual, causing offense and making an already fraught situation even worse.

Mar a Lago has enormous ridiculous false glamour. It is a sham of prestige. The only place suitable for two heads of state to meet is the White House. DC is the seat of government.

It is an insult to hold this meeting at that Palm Beach monstrosity.

It's because of Trump's personality, the fact that they aren't meeting at the WH - our symbolic house, how the Chinese own so much of our debt and what Trump was saying about China during the campaign.

I'm on tenterhooks about what our idiotic president will propose or demand that will embarrass America and screw up any relationship we have with the Chinese.

When I think of our relationship with China I'm always reminded of that Star Trek episode of two warring factions who have their hands around each others throats with equal strength. Right now we need each other even as China expands its influence in Africa. Right now we need each other and should use a measure of diplomacy to keep us all going. If Trump believes that his relationship with Putin and Russian money guys inoculates him and us from Chinese fiscal aggression - all I can think is that we're in for it.

Every darned day he makes me glad that I'm old. And I miss Obama.

Trump misrepresents the United States in such meetings. All meetings with heads of state should take place in our White House. That's true for safety reasons and to better represent our nation. Mar-a-Lago looks like a Vegas casino, outside and in. The White House looks like our nation's history.

Trump wants him to feel right at home, so they'll be ordering take-out from this menu. It will be delivered to the table in those paper take-out boxes that will be so familiar to Xi. The restaurant that will deliver, China Sky Take-Out is well-known in West Palm Beach for fast delivery and great low prices.

Here's an example of one of their favorites: General Tso's Chicken, a known favorite of Xi's.
