Twitter Inc said in a lawsuit on Thursday that it had received a demand from U.S. officials for records that could reveal the user behind an account opposed to President Donald Trump and that it was challenging the demand in court.

(6,344 posts)I knew someone that the government made his life a living hell. The IRS wiped out this business. The lawsuits the government threw at him prevented him from ever doing business in this state again. He had created a natural soil amendment that would have put the chemical companies out of business is why they went after him. It was an effort in tandem with big chem and the government.
His product and process was amazing! They watch him close, but maybe he will find a way to make it happen in another state or another country.

(7,581 posts)LOL!!! I would be honored to be unmasked calling him a douche bag of the highest order.
BTW, on Twitter, one of the Rogue accounts had that Trump had a KFC morning the other day = 3 buckets before noon. Yay!! Keep eating that saturated fat, fatso! (Now I feel guilty. But, still...)

(3,827 posts)From the article:
Esha Bhandari, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the Twitter user in the case, said the government's request was highly unusual. Requests for social media account information from the U.S. government typically involve national security or criminal charges, she said.
"We have seen no reason the government has given for seeking to unmask this speaker's identity," Bhandari said, adding that the right to anonymous speech against the government is "a bedrock American value" strongly protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

(7,963 posts)Twitter was forced to hand over posts from a Occupy Wall Street defendant who was charged with disorderly conduct. Another case resisting efforts to out users have been "partly thrown out". The courts seem to do whatever they damn well please-the Constitution is nothing but a piece of paper.

(34,086 posts)The account he's going after says it is owned by employees of the US immigration employess. It is one of the alt-XXX accounts that purports - to some extent - to be speaking on behalf of the agency Trump is trying to silence.
That's a little different than "merely" going after political opposition.
Not that he won't eventually.
Not that it's justified.
I just don't see this as a sign that he's moving against generic opposition, as opposed to against what he perceives as disloyal employees.
