74th wedding anniversary today. Difficult, no doubt, but what a loving tribute to a great partnership.
And God speed, John Glenn.

(40,416 posts)Sorry. Must have something in my eyes.
I watched The Right Stuff last week, which features Ed Harris as John Glenn and Mary Jo Deschanel as Annie. If the movie is factual, John stood up for Annie through thick and thin, even pissing off VEEP LBJ along the way.
Annie apparently stuttered quite a bit. John also was apparently hopelessly in love with her. A good team, sadly now broken up.

(10,419 posts)where John Glenn was revered, I was amazed at how Ed Harris just nailed his character.
I'm now in the Bay Area. 15 years or so ago, a coworker who was known for her sharp retorts and all-round snarkiness told me:
She was in SF going to a play off Union Square. She was walking behind an elderly couple that she soon realized was John and Annie. Her emotional comment was "There they were, walking along together and still holding hands after all these years. It was so sweet!"

(40,416 posts)I wish Annie the best. 74 years is a long time for a personal commitment. That speaks the best of both of them.
BTW, She's 97 years old!

(22,976 posts)I was fixed on Walter Cronkite's every word. That seems like a lifetime ago, but not 74 years.
These men were authentic heroes, as was our then-president, JFK.
These days, dwelling a bit in the past seems a healthy diversion from today's horrors, and knowing how far to the bottom this country has sunk.

I just wish Mr. Obama could have been there for a final tribute; I'm happy that our current Occupant, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave wasn't there.

(9,653 posts)I'm a space nut, and have always followed everything NASA. And I knew of the love story
of Annie and John Glenn. When I met her, the first thing I thought was 'no wonder why he loves
her so much.' She was kind, sweet, gentle, caring.
This has to be a hard day for her. My own parents made it to just shy of 66 years of marriage. My Mom
went first, and my Dad only lasted five months more. The look on his face every day was enough to
break a million hearts. I hope Annie has a lot of love and support in her life.
I adored her husband. I hope she won't mind my saying that.
