(31,706 posts)He lives off the talking points and cocktail party "conventional wisdom". The rushpublicans, to their credit , found their buzz word "taxes" in Robert's opinion and have done the usual fear mongering...turning this from being about health care into being a tax. THey know this word buzzes and has won them lots of elections over the past 30 years. Paint the Democrats at "tax and spend"...no matter how untrue it is. Stretch got the memo and is being an obedient stenographer.
Congressional Democrats better get their acts together here...as they're the most vulnerable. Expect rushpublican SuperPacs to paint anyone who support AHCA as being for "increased taxes and penalties"...tying it to "Obamacare" that still has a negative association. OK Debbie...Israel...this is your moment...and its quickly getting away...

(31,706 posts)That's been President Obama's problem in this entire matter. In the 24/7 media circus we live in lies and misinformation fly around the world while the truth is just waking up. The impression is what matters and once the word "tax" was thrown into this debate the rushpublicans immediately glammed on to their favorite "tax and spend" while the corporate media followed with their usual "equivelency" game that assumes every rushpublican talking point has merit and thus has to be run with. It's lazy on all their fronts.
This bill has a lot of intricate parts that when broken apart people like or want but wrapped up in a big box with the label "tax" near it makes it toxic...especially with a corporate media that is too caught up in the bloodsport of politics to care about nuance. Democrats still lose cause they don't realize this...

(90,364 posts)....the PENALTY for not getting health insurance for those who can afford it is a tax.
Gregory repeats a right wing meme unashamedly !!!
...listening to the rest of it he then misquote the solicitor general saying the PENALTY is a tax because it can go into the tax code vs this the tax code is how the penalty will be enforced.
The tax code is how the penalty will be enforced. Without an enforceable penalty all Americans end up paying for those who refuse to buy health insurance.

(343 posts)is exacted as a tax only on those who don't buy insurance. It is not a tax increase on the American people to pay for those who do not buy insurance. Huge difference. And Obama was correct in saying that there will be no tax increases for the American people (as a whole) because of the ACA. In addition, health insurance premiums will certainly rise (as they have been for a long while) but any increases will not be to cover those who are not insured. So, maybe the increases will not be as high and will level off in years to come. Ugh....how do some people not understand this?
