From everything I've read, they helped Trump all the way until about September. They never expected him to win. The goal was to damage Clinton enough to where she would be entangled in domestic and party issues. Him winning wasn't what they were expecting, but I think its obvious they knew he wouldn't last long either. So they have been taking advantage while it lasts.

It's unheard of for the Secretary of State of a new administration to fail so spectacularly on a major mission - and then to PUBLICIZE that failure to the entire world.

this was all done for Trump's benefit, so he could pretend that he is not really all that close to Putin. It's a ruse.
