If United Airlines can't do "hard" things like coordinate aviation travel, it causes me to wonder if they can do hard things like safety checks and airplane maintenance.

"But it's hard," is the part that has been stuck in my craw since I heard this story. Trusting a pilot and an airline with my life is also hard.

Confidence not inspired.

Safety checks and plane maintenance are 1:1 or 1:n activities where n is small.

Coordinated aviation travel is N:M where both N & M are large and the combinations are massive.

There is a reason physicists call the three-body-problem "hard"

Not that United should be excused for this.

and cost cutting in the name of increased profit, which is a set in stone mantra for corporations these days, means rot is endemic.
Airlines have been outsourcing their mechanic work for years now, to 3rd world countries, and every link in the chain of accountability is rusted and weak.

When I see United abuse and assault customers, not just in this case, but in THREE cases that have been reported recently,
it makes me not trust them, Period.
