(38,436 posts)I don't know how or why he will resign, quit, or whatever; but I do not think he will make it into 2018..or it will happen sooner.

(8,692 posts)As long as he delivers on deregulation and appointments the "intelligentsia" demands the red meat the base demands he will probably sail to renomination. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Mormons take the wheel on such coup attempt.
And if our primary season is another coronation of a lousy candidate for the wrong reasons and marred with another red diaper insurgency I suspect Trump will be re-elected too.

Sen. Walter Sobchak
(8,692 posts)That doesn't matter.
If we don't run a nationally competitive candidate we will lose to Trump or somebody else.
The last couple of months suggests to me we didn't learn a damn thing from the election.

(3,166 posts)will overlook Wisconsin, Michigan and PA, plus if dipshit survives he will have a record to run on, already looking like a failure
plus a lot of his base will not be here

(8,692 posts)There are places Hilary Clinton could have campaigned for months on end and not have been competitive. That was the issue, Hillary Clinton was not nationally competitive and Bernie Sanders sure as hell wasn't either.
If the attitude going into the primaries is "We'll show them!" and the mandarins decide to throw their support behind another candidate who lacks national appeal just to prove "America is ready for _________" well, we're probably going to lose again. A Trump record that we find deplorable (smirk) will probably be perceived as a record of excellence by the imbeciles who voted for him. Think of just how low the bar was for George W. Bush, it's even lower now. If Donald Trump doesn't grope the Duchess of Cambridge on live television he is probably doing pretty good if you're Paul Ryan or Whatever Koch.
Underestimating Trump was a huge mistake, oblivious indifference to the thinking of those who supported Trump was a huge mistake. We desperately need to break out of our own narrative and recognize where middle-America actually is and respond accordingly. That will make some people uncomfortable.

(396 posts)The GOP has too much to lose starting in 2018 for them to do too many crazy things domestically, and then after midterms everyone will be focused on 2020. Which is why the chances of Trump instigating a foreign war is very high because that's the only thing he'll be able to go crazy with and not have to worry about it hurting his numbers too much. The deplorables are coming out of the woodwork cheerleading his MOAB bombing in Afghanistan today. They LOVE that he's bombing brown people and the MSM is LEAST critical when it comes to foreign policy. I'm surprised he hasn't targeted Iran yet. His saber-rattling with North Korea is worst even though that's the country I care about the least in terms of their leadership. However NK is a nuclear power and Iran isn't. Iranian leadership isn't the best either, but they not Kim-Jong Un...they have more sense than he does. Plus I'd like to see Obama's Iran deal kept in tact. It's too early to tell what he'll do to Iran though. I feel like sometime before 2020, the neocons are going to try to attack it which is absolutely insane.
