God forbid somebody gets something for FREE ...

While we all recognize basic concepts like INITIAL INVESTMENT - whether in time or labor or both -- for eventual later payoff -- Conservative brains seem to go on lockdown when this idea is introduced CULTURALLY.

Farmers would certainly understand the intense work and cost of planting-tending-harvesting for later profit.

But the idea of doing this for human beings more generally somehow escapes them, an in Educate Citizens - Help them become productive taxpaying citizens - Reap the multitudinous societal rewards.

Known as FREE TUITION in this case.

I peruse Redstate sometimes to see how they think. This article revealed how twitchy they get at the idea that "SOMEBODY MAY GET SOMETHING FREE, GODDAMMIT!"

The entire plan will effect everyone in a bad way except the people getting free college for four years that others are paying for.

New York’s taxpayer-financed tuition ensures that others will be on the hook for college costs for many years to come as the cost of tuition will only continue to rise.

This reckless plan feeds the notion that you no longer have to work for what you want anymore, and that you can just depend on others to pay for your college and career.

Now implementation details excepted, this core idea that rather than bolstering the economy and culture, everything will come unglued because free tuition equals genetic laziness (getting to class, participating, homework, tests, applying knowledge = NOT WORKING somehow??)

Didn't Conservatives ever hear of co-ops? Or the original insurance pools? People getting together to help each other out so ALL could succeed?? Even if it doesn't benefit YOU immediately?

What is wrong with these selfish bastards?

Didn't Jesus have something to say about this kind of thinking and behavior?

Just sayin' ...

Recent college graduates who are just beginning on the long road to paying off their student loans are naturally a bit miffed, but that's going to happen regardless of when this worthy program gets instituted. So, you have the government step in and mitigate their obligation. Which pisses off the people who economized for years to pay off their own student loans. So, you have government step in and pay them something?

I would have no problem with doing just that. It's a good investment in our citizenry, and in the grand scheme of the federal budget, not all that expensive. But you're going to have sell it all the way up and down the line to the selfish bastards.

3. Good point - policy vs concept hurdles

I think one of their frequent tactics is to find one policy implementation challenge, or hiccup -- and then use that as an excuse for not implementing an entire idea or concept, as if the details of implementation invalidated the concept -- As if the practical aspects of governing wasn't hard sometimes.

Who knew??

Oh, wait a minute ...

I agree with you....I wish we could all just focus on making our society uplifting for everyone. So much talent is wasted when bright, motivated students can't afford an education. There is enough to go around if we have the will to make it so.

Business = Transactional
Education = Transformational

Balance needed, even in government

Then starting in Jan 2013 they STOPPED paying State income tax in Kansas under the Brokeback plan. So any bitching they would do about "hand outs" they just need to look in the mirror.

"Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they will never sit in." Try to explain this to a conservative/republican. It goes right over their heads.

10. Well I mean first they would want to know who paid for the trees

and then complain about climate change hoax and hippies wanting to plant trees, before stating that the planting of trees is more of a gardening job that should be completed by 'illegals' who shouldn't be here anyway. Their heads would explode before you could finish explaining that is a metaphor.

11. This gets back to the idea of givers and takers. One party wants to take everything
Fri Apr 14, 2017, 01:45 PM
Apr 2017

away from others: rights, education, arts, jobs, health care, food stamps, welfare, social security etc etc and the other party wants to give to everyone: everyone gets to vote, have healthcare, affordable housing, food, education, financial security, clean water/air etc.

This attitude of "mine mine mine" and no one should get anything unless I get it too even if I don't want or need it (like the old men making the comments about getting a mammogram at the women's health meeting).

I don't have children, but I am fine with paying taxes for schools because that 1) everyone deserves an education and 2) selfishly that we all benefit from having an educated society.

Take my tax $ for improved public transportation, for subsidized child care, for working training, for art & cultural centers, for environmental protection, for healthcare, welfare - take whatever I have so that everyone has what they need to not just survive but also flourish. Not just because it is the right thing to do for others, but again selfishly - we can't go wrong when EVERYONE has education, healthcare, food, housing, clothing and opportunities to advance. I don't understand how so many people see that as a bad thing and want to TAKE from everyone. Billionaires will never be able to spend all their money, yet they will clamor for a tax cut that saves them $250,000 but takes away from the poor and middle class.

How did we evolve into this mentality that seems so counter-intuitive to the survival of a species? I read an article a year or so ago (so forgive me if I am sketchy on the details) about how trees share resources with each other. So if there are 2 species of different trees - one thrives in shade, one in sun - when one needs nutrients because the conditions aren't optimal, it's neighbor tree shares and vice versa. I think they also explained how there is a 'mother' tree that shares resources throughout the root system to other trees? It was fascinating and now reflecting back, trees have their shit together better than conservatives. Trees have evolved to understand sharing resources benefits the forest, there are no greedy trees.

Sorry I just went off the rails on a weird tangent - but this has really been eating away at me.
