(13,485 posts)Everything said in post #1 through #5 is the fact. We were in the laughing stocks. Now, no one is laughing; it's replaced by disgust and mistrust. I have family ties in Europe so I'm speaking from the perspective of their experience with other Europeans.

3. Shock-and-awe weapons
4. Yee-haw diplomacy.
5. Right-wing Christian Fundamentalism as a politically powerful doomsday cult.
6. Pride of ignorance and anti-intellectualism disguised as "Common sense".
These have replaced fairness, equality, innovation, science and opportunity. We were never perfect, but were once better known for things other cultures admired.

(11,949 posts)I spend as much time as possible outside of this country. And while we have lots of problems I have yet to visit a nation that is trouble free. Or free from all the biases we find troubling here.
But if it makes you feel better to believe that all we have offered the world is Hollywood then more power to you.
