MSNBC is reporting that the Treasury department has just ruled that several US companies, including Exxon will not be receiving waivers for the Russian imposed sanctions. This is obviously a huge deal for both Exxon and Putin as it leaves their joint $500B oil agreement frozen for the foreseeable future. I will update this with a link to a corroborating article once one becomes available.

(111,098 posts)So Trump will use the extra time, until the sanctions are lifted, to try and make a better deal for himself.
He's negotiating.

The link says "in consultation with" Trump. Who told who what?
My gut tells me that since we're so close to Trump-Russia story blowing up, and Rosneft is the key to it all even Trump couldn't let this go through at this time. Better to avoid prison (possibly) even if it means losing billions.
That said, I still don't know what to make of Russia's forays into Alaska. Could be all for show, could be Putin is pissed, or maybe Putin is just testing Trump.

(5,801 posts)it would have looked bad to lift sanctions on the first try. After they think the public is sufficiently tired of the story, they'll try again.
Of course, those of us here will never stop paying attention.

(23,102 posts)I really needed some good news and this hit the spot. Oh, I bet Pootie and Drumpf are just steaming mad right now. Will Drumpf go on a tweet storm regarding his own cabinet pick? I can't imagine him just letting this slide, it's the one thing (other than eliminating himself from paying taxes ever again. He needs to accomplish this so he can return to money laundering for Russian mobsters, selling them houses at 10x the value once sanctions get removed.

(20,998 posts)...and I don't believe for one minute that the tRump* "administration" does this for the right reasons... this is all about laying cover until the next best opportunity without all that pesky observation and oversight from pissed-off citizens. Even the most deliberately obtuse of the tRumpers* would see the ulterior motives.

(13,871 posts)Check some stories on the internet. This is being run as "the Trump Administration has denied permission.'
I would call that a win.
And when they reverse the decision in a few months no one will notice and it will be a double win for Exxon, Putin and Trump.

(367 posts)But in a few months, after they've shoved a health care bill through using the upcoming spending bill deadline (April 28) as leverage they'll do taxes and hope voters won't notice.

(129,053 posts)and would be way too obvious. They will try again by sliding it in a must-pass appropriations bill or on some innocuous bill that gets a unanimous consent vote because lawmakers were getting out of town for yet another break.

(6,974 posts)Agree.
They'll get that deal DONE, but as you said if it passed right now, a bit too obvious.
However, it's funny that they'd try to make it "appear" to be them slapping the Secretary of Secrecy and big daddy blackmailer and puppet master putin, because most in the media won't say too much about it, plus what can we as the people exactly do about it in the short term?
That big, tasty oil deal WILL be done.
"Or else" says big daddy blackmailer putin.

(129,053 posts)Rick Perry is in DOE and is probably busy making sure the paperwork details are taken care of. He's already getting ready to start manufacturing ways to justify more subsidies for fossil fuel providers by dredging up the age-old GOP mantra of "market forces" as part of directing that studies be done of the current electrical grid.

(16,887 posts)...and the ultimate payoff (lifting of sanctions) happen in a quick and obvious manner. Remember, they know that the FBI and Investigations are closing in on them (since the "Sting" operation has been revealed) and the arrests can't happen without the "proof" and the payoff in the crime occurring. So if Trump and this administration appear to show they are tough on Russia and didn't want to lift sanctions, and even made tough statements to the contrary, then they can say "what crime? What collusion?".
However, it's all part of the strategy. With the possibility of events in Syria and all out war in the Middle East and even what is happening with North Korea, just wait and see that suddenly Russia and Putin will appear and do something that is a big move in helping stabilize the situation (i.e. Help get rid of Assad and stop the war) and as a reward, the Trump administration (after appearing so tough on Russia) will relent and reward in the name of "peace" to Russia by lifting sanctions.
Then no matter what the FBI and Intelligence communities can try to pin on them for collusion, they can always claim it is a false witch hunt and that they did no pro quid quo and if anything, they helped bring peace to Middle East and world...
And we all will just be expected to believe that it's coincidence then that the Exxon CEO is Sec. Of State and that Goldman Sachs people are all around Trump.
