Two east Cobb women, a Democrat and a Republican, will face off in a runoff to decide who will fill the empty District 32 state Senate seat.

Christine Triebsch, a lawyer, and Dr. Kay Kirkpatrick, a retired orthopedic surgeon, beat out six other candidates and were the top two vote-getters Tuesday night.

The two are both political newcomers and will face off in a runoff scheduled for May 16.

“The race will be different because now it is between a Republican and a Democrat,” said Kirkpatrick.

Triebsch — a Democrat — received 14,169 votes or 24.2 percent of the vote while Kirkpatrick, a Republican — received 12,354 votes, or 21.1 percent, according to unofficial numbers posted by Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office.
