Through my wife's work we took part in Rebuilding Together Richmond. 39 homes in two neighborhoods. We were helping an elderly gentleman whose son actually works for my wife's (global) company.
Moved furniture out of 3 rooms.
Stripped the floors back down to the original hardwood - flooring company will re-finish them this week - 2 layers of carpet and 1 of linoleum flooring.
New kitchen faucet.
New gutter.
And insulation under the house where the 3 brave souls who went down there first found a dead mummified cat and ended up looking like coal miners when they were finished. One of the company VP's was part of that crew and one lady who apparently really really likes bugs. The heating bills were as high as $400 a month due to the lack of insulation.
18 people. 4 hours. A LOT of work. Our little girl put new house numbers on the front porch and helped out everywhere. Her school requires that every student put in at least 20 hours of volunteer hours in order to advance to the next grade.

And what a great lesson for your daughter too. As the twig is bent...

(182,848 posts)While I was on the gutters the others had to work around his bed - huge solid oak frame - lifting it up and stripping the floor while shifting the bed around. Lots of upper level management all solving problems instantaneously. The only access for the insulation crew was a hole in the floor right in the middle of everything. It was where the old heat grate was.

Really great National organization. Linked to AmeriCorps. Corporate funded and the really nice tools made available to us were from another charity called "Toolbox".
