CNN: Mattis Tells Congress Trump Budget Won't Cover Cost Of Rebuilding Military

By ESME CRIBB Published APRIL 22, 2017, 2:28 PM EDT

Secretary of Defense James Mattis told Congress that President Donald Trump’s Pentagon budget plan will not be sufficient to fulfill his campaign promise to “rebuild” the U.S. military, CNN reported on Friday. Mattis made those comments in private, per CNN’s report, which cites four unnamed sources familiar with those conversations.

One unnamed Republican lawmaker told CNN that Mattis said he is “being thwarted getting his message out” that the budget plan “is insufficient to do what Trump has called for.”

CNN also reported that the Trump administration’s Pentagon budget request falls short of what the Pentagon wanted, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the deliberations.

“We expect Congress will work with the administration to fund much of our additional (fiscal) 2017 budget request,” a Pentagon spokesman said in a statement to CNN. “The secretary and the service chiefs highlighted the readiness needs of the armed forces in their recent testimony. That has not changed.”

We do need a better fighter plane (other than the F-35) but the military is just fine. What we need to do is change the cullture that allows sexual abuses and the horrific actions we've seen evidence of in Iraq.

That's where the really damaging attacks are happening to the fabric of our republic.

"Boots on the ground" response is becoming more "old fashioned" IMO.

That's where we can ever more increase the odds in our favor of finding and sidelining foreign and home grown threats before they strike.

More Stuxnet etc. Takes investing in (egads) broad based EDUCATION to create cyber warriors who understand history and civic values.

the next dozen countries' military combine somehow needs "rebuilding." These people are nuts. Your nickname is fitting, Mr. Mattis.

59 missiles at a million dollars a pop, which BTW did little to damage Assad's ability to wage war against his own citizens.

I would just laugh during the primaries and the national election when Trump would talk about how BAD our military was and the flag on the lapel wearing GOP would applaud. Having served in the military and worked in Contracting for the DoD, I knew that no one had better and the more Trump talked the more he revealed how truly ignorant of the facts he was. I can't recall in my adult lifetime, a candidate more ignorant and proud of that ignorance. If he weren't he would have fixed it by now. He has no desire to study and learn what he doesn't know and that is what makes him so dangerous.

"We expect Congress will work with the administration to fund much of our additional (fiscal) 2017 budget request,” a Pentagon spokesman said in a statement to CNN."

Really? Half of our budget should be raised so we can make more nukes? So we can change over to green energies, something the Congress has flat out refused to allow the military become green.? Should we have to pay for more tax cuts for the 1% do we splurge on things like the F-35? Which of course we don't need.

So when all the Joint Chiefs were talking about powering down the military, that changed over night because....
