North Carolina Republicans late Monday successfully overrode Gov. Bev Perdues veto of a fracking bill, but not without pulling a legislative trick.
State Rep. Becky Carney (D) accidentally pressed the wrong button and voted with Republicans to override the veto, the Charlotte Observer reports. And a maneuver by Rep. Paul Stam blocked her from correcting her vote.
It was a huge mistake, Carney said. I take full responsibility. According to Carney, it was her first time pressing the wrong button in her decade of public service.
The GOPs move drew jeers from Democrats in the legislature. I am shocked and disappointed, Rep. Pricey Harrison told the Observer. The atmosphere is toxic right now.
Perdues move Sunday was her third veto of Republican-backed legislation, the Raleigh News and Observer reports, in the past four days. The Democratic governor is generally supportive of fracking the process of pumping water and chemicals into rock to mine natural gas but doesnt believe the bill contains enough public or environmental safety measures.

(12,287 posts)2. Is there such a thing
as her vetoing the same bill again? I'm sure that Dem WON'T make the same mistake.
Once a veto has been overturned by both houses, the bill becomes law. It can't be vetoed twice. It can be repealed, as any law can, by future legislatures. For now, fracking goes forward.
She chose... poorly...
