General Discussion

I have to admit, DU is the first site I check before I go anywhere else. I don't watch tv news or listen to the radio very much. Occasionally I'll go to Daily Kos.
What other sources do you go to?
Do you have any suggestions... blogs, podcasts, websites, etc.? I've tried looking at the blogroll on DU's main page but a lot of those sites are inactive.
I'm trying to expand my horizons and compile a list of sources. Hopefully this thread will be useful to others as well!

(182,876 posts)Google gives a good overall idea of the top news of the day with some entertainment and science.
Vox has really good in depth reporting. Bloomberg has a team approach specifically the reporting by Ben Elgin.

(34,137 posts)In my customized list, some sections retain stories for months. It's as though their formula for filling spaces will not allow any empty slot and has to have a certain number of stories even if nothing new has been filed.
I'm also checking What The Fuck Just Happened Today? every day for a synopsis of political news.

(278 posts)I spend a lot of time on Euronews, which is on sling tv, since they show what's going on everywhere. They don't spend much time on 45.

(68,657 posts)Salon, Slate,Washington Post, New York Times, Daily Beast..also listen to Stephanie Miller and other Sirius radio hosts...but DU is my favorite site.

(12,051 posts)And now I'm so sick of Trump news in general that I'm taking days and days off from ANY news, just to keep my head on straight.

(16,646 posts)I read a newspaper everyday, mostly for the local stuff. The wife listens to way too much CNN so I get a contact stream of information from that. After that it's mostly Wash Post and NYT exposure. Mostly I use DU to become aware of issues and events I might otherwise miss, not to mention ideas I might otherwise hear. Sometimes I even argue about them.

(43,195 posts)Things like Latest Breaking News help lead me to a variety of different news stories that I might not have been aware of if I didn't constantly check DU.
That being said, I'm not going to just take everything for face value just because I see it on DU. For example, I'm not going to immediately go sharing some gossip that came through on the Palmer Reporter as if it is verifiable truth.

(23,340 posts)This is more a commentary site than a news site.
I do check it to find some stories I don't see elsewhere.
I do the print and online versions of the Washington Post, online NYT, Atlantic, New Yorker, and things brought up by Google News. I also get articles via my Facebook feed. NPR and PBS, when I have the time.
DU is a secondary source, and I usually go to the primary first.

(8,554 posts)This place was once THE site to go to for breaking news on absolutely any topic, invaluable for keeping up with current events, worldwide.
Three years ago there was an horrific mudslide just a little way down the road from me, but early on, I had no idea that it had occurred.
DUer Malaise posted an article on here from the Guardian about it, published practically immediately after it had occurred, and that is how I received the original heads-up.
An astute Jamaican alerted with a piece from that United Kingdom news service to reach clear up here to wilderness U.S.A. and informed this backwoods Amerikan.
There was absolutely nothing on our WA news about it til hours later, even my local news sources which provide breaking emergencies to the area were unaware of the tragedy that was happening.
That was DU.

You're right - we've slipped big time.
The good news is that the planet is so well connected now, someone will alert us.

(14,841 posts)read all the latest news... especially all the comments. This seems to cut down on any anxiety I might have ordinarily felt when listening to the same news items on the TV.

Television news in the U.S.A. is worthless, especially commercial television.

(51,308 posts)DU is even cited as a ""fake news" site now.
I've read some real bullshit here purporting to be "breaking" news. Usually in all caps.
Shoes dropping, boots dropping, HUGE story about to hit, worse than watergate, WAR tonight!, get thee to an fallout shelter!- I've read it all here. And none of it amounted to a hill of beans.
I love DU, but I believe very little I read until I confirm elsewhere - the breaking news, all caps gang are a huge amusement though.

(2,434 posts)I thank you or that. I am old so I still occasionally watch some network news, but it is usually the Today Show. I also watch AM Joy and some shows on CNN, but nothing religiously. I also watch local news and read a local paper. On the net I dance from dailycos to huffington post to NYT and WAPO, but you have all persuaded me to begin spending time at the Guardian. Thanks!
