What does homeowner's insurance cover

Does anyone know what homeowner's insurance generally covers in regards to a power outage due to a huge storm? I know they should cover the cost of having the downed trees removed but I don't know if they cover other things like all the food lost, hotel bills, etc.

If this is the wrong forum I apologize.

You really need to talk to your agent. But hopefully maybe we have a DUer in the biz who can give SOME insight.

Specific policies can vary greatly in this regard.

for the replies. I will call them today when I get up. We lost everything in the freezer and fridge, plus hotel room costs, plus tree removal costs. This was an expensive damn storm.

Mine covers food spoilage, but you do have to meet the deductible. As to temporary housing my does, but it is only if the house is not able to be inhabited, like in fire (smoke damage) or storm damage (roof taken off) and total lost. I am not sure if no power is enough to qualify, if the only "damage" were no AC, TV and other "modern convenances" I don't think it would. But once again that is mine, yours may be different.

My homeowners insurance didn't cover any of my food loss from a bad storm we had but I was able to write it all off on my taxes at the end of that year. You might want to check with your tax agent if your insurance doesn't cover it.
