I think someone was seriously jackin' it in SD tonight... I live near downtown in SD, and I watched the fireworks display sorta by accident. There was this small, intense twin burst of fireworks for about 45 seconds; I saw both as I was walking back from the store, having gone for coffee... it was about 8:45, 15 minutes before the fireworks were supposed to start.
It was a set of big loud bursts, perfectly coordinated, with many overlaying bursts in each, and BOOMBOOMBOOM throughout. One came from the direction of Seaport Village, another further south, in the direction of the train terminal.
I thought, Wow! That's how MOST fireworks displays END! This should be GOOD!
Then, nothing. For the last hour and more, silence.
I think someone accidentally lit all the fuses at once. Oops. Sorry, hon. That's... NEVER happened to me before.
Then again, maybe San Diego planned it that way. This new form of Premature Patriotism we've seen so much of from the Creepublicans these days, I guess it requires us to cut back sharply on patriotic displays for the commoners.
"And when I say entertainment, that includes medicine, of course; look how many tv shows about medicine there are! There IS a CONNECTION! And if you don't believe me, I guess you're just under OBAMA'S WORLD-WIDE VOODOO SPELL! I humbly submit this nonsense as my actual opinion," said an unidentified GOP talking-and-pointing guy, angrily, and with a lot of pointing.

(26,328 posts)About ten minutes in to the show, all hell broke loose. We were on top of the ball park dug-outs about 100 yards away and could see silhouettes of people running (for their live apparently). It was like a scene out of Apocalypse Now (even though the movie hadn't been made yet).
We were like ohh ahhh... that was quick. But a cool finale.
Turns out a spark or a flare landed in a pile? or a pot? Not sure.
IIRC, someone died of a heart attack and some people were burned.

(21,551 posts)The entire show went up in 10 seconds. 4 barges, and 3 of the four fired all the shells at once. Afterwards everyone was still standing around thinking the main show was about to start, even though it was all over with. I'm sure someone is going to get fired. I have to say, though, it was impressive!

(17,742 posts)SAN DIEGO The Fourth of July fireworks show above San Diego Bay was over before it was supposed to start after a malfunction caused the display that was planned to last nearly 20 minutes to burn up all at once.
The Coast Guard says the mishap occurred minutes before the scheduled opening of the Big Bay Boom show. Guard spokesman Rich Dann tells U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/LpWoU7) he's never seen so many fireworks go off at one time.
The San Diego Fire Department says there were no injuries. More than 500,000 people witnessed the short-lived spectacle.

(137 posts)Due to "budgetary restraints". We watched Coronado's FW's from J Street Marina though.
I read about SD's debacle last night and had to roll my eyes.
Typical.
