WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney's wife says her husband is thinking about picking a woman to be on his ticket this fall.
Ann Romney says in an interview, "We've been looking at that and I love that option as well."
She tells CBS News she thinks the person selected for the No. 2 spot should be "someone that obviously can do the job but will be able to carry through with some of the other responsibilities."
The former Massachusetts governor, who was joined by his wife for the interview, declined to describe the status of the vice presidential search, saying "that's something I'm keeping close with my team."

(14,549 posts)Here is the short list: Palin - BTDT, Meg Whitman - she's an obnoxious loser with mega bucks so that could happen, Susana Martinez -- probably loses Romney some of his base so no net gain with that pick, Nikki Haley -- claims she will not accept a VP slot, Kay Bailey Hutchinson -- could happen but she is even older than Romney and I'm not sure she gets him the demo he needs help with -- women under 50 years old.
It's going to be a conservative white guy from Florida, the south or Texas.

(10,137 posts)via some funding company. Also she's a Mormon, IIRC, and two on the ticket will be a hard sell. Plus, the more Californians got to know her the less they liked her.
Condi Rice has been mentioned, but I don't think she'll bring anything to the ticket even if she does accept.

(19,458 posts)therein lies the rub. And I'm not about to tell them. they think that by adding someone black or hispanic or female, is going to make people vote for Romney. But as the rest of us saw, (apparently they didn't,) having a woman on the ticket, even with a very old candidate, didn't work. We don't vote for a Pres thinking "oh good, they have a ______ VP, so if anything happens we'd have a ______ President. The type of people who would vote for Romney would actually be against having a ________ VP or President anyway.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)And that putting someone like Sarah Palin on the ticket would bring all these disgruntled Hillary Rodham Clinton voters over to the GOP.

(32,084 posts)Are they really that stupid to pull this crap again? Do they really have such little regard for women that they think we'd come running to Romney because he's running with another woman on the ticket? Especially after all of the anti-woman legislation they have been passing over the past 4 years? Apparently so.

(24,412 posts)so, I'm going to answer: YES! Just think how Palin energized the wignuts in the last election. It didn't win them the election, of course, mostly because her obvious lack of experience/qualifications (and the blunder of the McCain campaign nominating her in the first place) scared a lot of indies and moderate Republicans right into the Obama camp. Their (dis-)regard for the rights and basic humanity of women and their "war on women" has been going on for a long time but it hasn't been until 2011 that they've been able to actually pass a whole lot of crazy stuff (i.e. transvaginal probes and the like). Any woman whom would be swayed to vote for Romney simply if he chooses a female candidate..................

(1,418 posts)First, I'm skeptical because Willard wants this really bad. the problem is he's as BORING and white bread as they
get. he can't pick someone, Rubio for example, who's obviously got more charisma and would get more media
attention than Willard-- that can't happen.
the same applies to the unfortunate Bachmann.. just too nutty, too controversial.. liable to committ gaffes regarding
Rmoney being a Mormon.
My money is still on other BORING white bread guys like Pawlenty or Ryan.
Second, IF Rmoney picks some sort of "normal" credible woman, and he shoots up in the polls in states like Ohio and
Florida, it will be interesting to see Obama's reaction
karynnj
(59,503 posts)First of all, in many cases, having or not having charisma is a function of whether the media likes them. Witness how the very charismatic McCain circa 2000 became the charismaless McCain 2008 and now is regaining some charisma. Rubio has enormous support from the RW media - and the mainstream media, but he he really does not have the type of charisma that came from the grassroots.
Like any nominee, Romney will take the person his team feels would give him the best chances of winning. Look at what happened in 2004. Kerry who easily beat all comers in the primaries without party or media support at the beginning was pushed to take Edwards because the gaga media reporting caused Edwards to poll and focus group the best. Kerry, far more principled and decent than Romney is, ignored his negative gut feel on Edwards and took him. Had Edwards responded with gratitude and did all the campaign wanted, it might have been a good political choice - and getting elected was job 1. However, the man Kerry was rumored to prefer, Durbin, would have done far better debating Cheney and made the argument that both men were ready day 1 more credible. It could be the lesson of 2008 is that charisma in a VP is over rated. (Palin and Edwards were said to have charisma, no one claimed that of Gore 1992, Biden, or Cheney.)
First of all, in many cases, having or not having charisma is a function of whether the media likes them
Here we go again... totally exaggerating the role of media. you're wrong
There is NO there there... nothing to work with as far as media coverage. because Rmoney is boring and
white bread as hell. He as ZERO charisma... even Murdoch said so.
The "media" cannot make a silk purse out of a cow's ear... as the ol adage goes.
karynnj
(59,503 posts)I was not suggesting he had any charisma at all. I was suggesting that Rubio's charisma (and much of Edwards) was a media defined quantity.

(36,470 posts)I think she's just spouting off, putting some reassuring vibes out there to conservative women that he isn't as out of touch as he appears to be. I don't think Mitt could work with a woman, so I don't think he's seriously thinking of one. But it's fun to speculate who he might choose.

Ayotte has been criticized for her former office's alleged refusal to investigate charges against mortgage investment firm Financial Resources Mortgage (FRM)[24] which has been accused of orchestrating a $80100 million Ponzi scheme. Scott Farah, the former president of Financial Resources Mortgage, was accused of swindling investors out of millions of dollars, using investor funds to pay other investors and his own personal expenses, and has agreed, under a plea agreement, to plead guilty to federal wire and mail fraud charges in exchange for a nearly 20-year prison sentence.[25]
In May 2010, New Hampshire's current Attorney General Michael Delaney issued a report[26][27][28][29][30][31][32] faulting New Hampshire's Attorney General's office during Ayotte's tenure, the state Banking Department and the state Securities Bureau for failing to investigate complaints against Financial Resources Mortgage. Concurrently, a joint state legislative committee[33][34] conducted an independent investigation and held public hearings. The Joint Legislative Committee to Review the States Regulatory Oversight Over Financial Resources Mortgage reached conclusions similar to those of Delaney's report, according to a draft report.[25][35][36][37]
Republican candidate for Governor John Stephen has criticized Ayotte for her lack of oversight of Financial Resources Mortgage's activities. Stephens has said that Ayotte "has to be held accountable" for her and the New Hampshire Department of Justice's failure to act on complaints received about Financial Resources Mortgage's conduct.[38]

So if Rmoney puts Rice on the campaign that means anything that happened during Bush's 8 years in office is campaign fodder that will be used. Rmoney has enough baggage of his own without adding George W. Bush's baggage (via Condi Rice) to his campaign.
