The rich and powerful only very rarely suffer consequences for their actions in this country. And they band together to protect their own.
A Republican Congress will not remove Trump from office. NEVER. They will NEVER tag their party with the first Presidential firing in history. Not for collusion, or bribery, or outright treason. If there's an (R) beside the President's name, he is completely immune from consequences. If we somehow managed to capture both houses of Congress, a Democratic Congress would dither, or "take impeachment off the table," or do a damn Tip O'Neill and say it would "hurt the country too much" or they would "reach across the aisle" or some other bullshit. Congress will NEVER remove a sitting Republican President. That's my prediction.
And somehow, if the stars aligned and we had the most improbable moment in the entire universe since its billions-years-ago beginning, and Congress actually did remove Trump because of some kind of unbelievable mudslide of undeniable evidence, the odds are even infinitely less that Pence would get removed even if there was incontrovertible evidence of him playing a key role in treason. And somehow, if that happened - something that I would consider to be one divided by the number of atoms in the universe raised to the power of femtoseconds since the universe began - then the Congress in the name of "unity" would approve everything that President Paul Ryan suggested, to "bring the country together." And then, this country, in its infinite stupidity, would elect Ryan as President and give him both houses of Congress.
In summary: I think it's not happening. Don't get your hopes up. There are no arrests coming, there are no convictions coming, there are no consequences coming. I have no faith whatsoever in the government as it currently stands to do the right thing. Reagan got to collude with the Iranians to win an election, and is lionized in his own party. Bush got away with taking the country into war on lies. No consequences whatsoever. Trump will get away with this, too. I don't even have enough hope left to hope I'm wrong.

(3,077 posts)That is where you are at. It has been such a roller coaster ride of anger and despair and it's easy to get sucked in and let it swallow you whole. But you have to deal with it as you see fit. I feel it immensely but I channel it into things I can control. I am active locally. It's good that you are letting it out though because hopelessness is a heavy burden to carry.

(9,267 posts)Nothing will happen. Repugs are "party over country" with no exceptions. Teflon Don will be hated by a majority of citizens and continue unscathed.
I see FB posts from the other side and have to wonder what the f*ck universe are they living in.
The only hope I have is that maybe this and the Deathcare bill will get us congress back next year. But then again there's voter suppression, abortion and guns.

Like the day Comey got fired. Like the day the first person, some low level person (equivalent to a Watergate burglar) gets arrested. Eventually we'll reach critical mass.
Or we won't.
