After Comey, Republicans worry about 2018 'wipeout'

CORONADO, CALIF. - Former FBI Director James Comey has his share of Republican detractors, but senior GOP officials called his unceremonious firing by President Donald Trump nothing short of an optics disaster with potentially dramatic implications for the 2018 congressional contests.

Comey has been leading the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible ties to Trump’s campaign, and he was abruptly fired on Tuesday. Trump said that it was time for a “new beginning” at the FBI, and certainly, Comey has become a lightning rod on both sides of the aisle.

But political leaders from Trump’s own party say the timing looks “terrible,” and they worry the move will fuel an already-energized progressive movement as 2018 congressional races begin to take shape.

“Regardless of the fact that he has every right to fire the FBI director, and regardless of whatever argument you can make in favor of having to fire Comey, at this time, it doesn’t look good,” said Jennifer Horn, the former chair of the New Hampshire Republican Party, who has called for an independent investigation. “When you and your associates are being investigated, the optics of what he did and how he did it are terrible.”

News of the Comey firing broke just as the Republican National Committee’s spring meeting was getting underway at a luxe oceanfront resort here near San Diego. In interviews with current and former top RNC members on Wednesday, veteran Republicans called the timing politically problematic, with some warning of potentially serious consequences for the 2018 midterms.

that their majorities in both Houses of Congress are up for grabs.

How do House Republicans defend their votes on Health Care? People affected by losing their health coverage are paying attention.

How do they defend Trump and his authoritarian dictatorship ways? They cannot! They know that the Comey firing IS related to the investigation into the Trump-Russia connection.

As Admiral Yamamoto stated after the devastation of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, "All we have done is awaken a sleeping giant".

The sleeping giant is the American people and we have awoken.

Republican is the American default and admission of error (even with the facts of obvious collusion staring you dead in the eyes) is a Cardinal SIN in Conservatopia.

I would rely on telling people how you're better, specific PLANS to make their lives better and how you're going to accomplish this despite the hyper-Capitalist takeover OF America.

Seriously, the moment Republicans realize that they have more to fear by supporting Trump, his Presidency is over.

now that the horses are gone, it's time to close the barn door?

McConnell's flat rejection of an independent investigation (instead of simply tying it up in subcommittees) tells me he's not worried about 2018

And I think they are. Democrats need to keep the Russian issue and Dump's constant efforts to squelch it in front of the public for the next year+.

What about the fact there is a traitor in the White House letting the Russian come and go as they please and locking out the American Press.

Go after taking care of children AFTER they are born, nahhh...but go after their ability to get their druuuugs, the Stupid care! (A bit harsh I know but I am pissed)

Trump should have offended Republicans to the core from the moment he mocked the disabled. They should have turned their backs on him when he proved himself a sexist scumbag. That should have been scuzzy enough for them to be Americans first instead of politicians.

But no.
Now they can account for all the shit they have enabled. They own the murderous RyanCare Act, the insidious woman hate, the disrespect of nature, the abusing the earth.
Let them all lose it all.
