What if everybody around him is being investigated and the investigators are probing to gather as much info from the campaign staff and White House staff around Trump - working from the bottom up.

But that doesn't guarantee he was immune from being "collateral damage"

...that the investigation was inexorably going to lead straight to him, would he have taken so precipitous an action?

Knowing Trump's M.O., I very much doubt that, if he knew he was in the clear but other members of his administration weren't, he would have any compunctions about throwing them under the bus (just like Flynn)…and then making the claim that such harsh steps against former allies were "proof" of his integrity and patriotism.

No, Trump had to know the risks of the action he took, including the possibility of further investigations leading to impeachment. If, in his judgment, it was better to risk those than to let Comey proceed, he must know that he would be in the cross-hairs of the current inquest.
