Fired lifeguard says ‘no thanks’ to job offer

By CARLI TEPROFF AND ESTEBAN ILLADES

The Miami Herald

Tomas Lopez, the Hallandale Beach lifeguard who was fired this week after he rescued a man outside of his coverage zone, was offered back his job Thursday, but “humbly declined,” Lopez told The Miami Herald.

“The company offered a real good apology,” Lopez said.

Lopez, 21, said he will take a break from lifeguarding and focus on his studies at Broward College.

Lopez was fired Monday after he left his station at 1:40 p.m. Monday to help a man who was drowning behind the Hemispheres apartment complex, 1950 S. Ocean Dr.

Don't blame him for turning the job down, but the company certainly had an appropriate response to public shaming.
