Nixon faced impending impeachment because he plotted to have an investigation called off.

From http://watergate.info/1972/06/23/the-smoking-gun-tape.html :

This is the transcript and recording of a meeting between President Nixon and his Chief of Staff, H.R. Haldeman, in the Oval Office on June 23, 1972.

The conversation took place from 10.04am to 11.39am. The recording subsequently became known as the Smoking Gun and led directly to Nixon’s resignation.

The release of the tape was ordered by the Supreme Court on July 24, 1974, in a case known as United States v. Nixon. The court’s decision was unanimous.

President Nixon released the tape on August 5. It was one of three conversations he had with Haldeman six days after the Watergate break-in. The tapes prove that he ordered a cover-up of the Watergate burglary. The Smoking Gun tape reveals that Nixon ordered the FBI to abandon its investigation of the break-in.

Here is part of the "Smoking Gun" tape transcript which appears in the article:

Nixon: When you get in these people when you…get these people in, say: “Look, the problem is that this will open the whole, the whole Bay of Pigs thing, and the President just feels that” ah, without going into the details… don’t, don’t lie to them to the extent to say there is no involvement, but just say this is sort of a comedy of errors, bizarre, without getting into it, “the President believes that it is going to open the whole Bay of Pigs thing up again. And, ah because these people are plugging for, for keeps and that they should call the FBI in and say that we wish for the country, don’t go any further into this case”, period!

Haldeman: OK.

Nixon: That’s the way to put it, do it straight (Unintelligible)

Haldeman: Get more done for our cause by the opposition than by us at this point.

Nixon: You think so?

Haldeman: I think so, yeah.

...just to relive happy memories. Even though he turned my stomach it was fun to watch him swirl the drain again. He was evil but he also was so much sharper than the Orange Orangutan. Politically speaking-he knew exactly how to break the Country into the Hippies and the "Silent Majority" to the long term detriment of the Democratic Party with his disgusting Southern Strategy Yet another election lost by naïveté of voters that thought the Democrats and Republicans were the same because of one issue without taking the broader view.

Then it was between Eugene McCarty and Humphrey. Party bosses picked Humphrey.

Humphrey was not very inspiring and was already third choice for many Democrats.

I see Trump copying Nixon's playbook. Older people were tired of hippies and race riots, so Nixon took advantage of that. In Trump's case, he magnified a bunch of stuff. In this case, were some protests that got out of hand after police shootings, but it was very small compared to the 60s. Trump created fear when it wasn't tangible.

I remember we were driving up in Morro Bay when two guys look like Jesus walk passed our car. They were at least 10 feet from our car and did not approach it in anyway, shape or form. I don't think they even saw our car because they were talking to each other and minding their own business. My mom, all of a sudden, who is prone to hysteria, screams "Hippies!!! Honey turn the car around they're hippies!!!" She had her arm bracing the dash. I was 11 and I didn't consider myself to be totally naive about long haired people. I subscribed to Tiger Beat and these guys didn't look much different than Mickey Dolenz. However, I had never heard the phrase, "Hippy" before. Turns out my mom was just doing her hysteria bit. (She was mentally ill) My dad gave us a nice little conversation when we got home.
