(14,971 posts)It's nuts that a leader can come here from another country and beat up on our citizens. Who does Erdogan think he is?

(90,767 posts)Nine people were hurt and two arrests were made during an altercation at the Turkish ambassadors residence in the US capital during a visit by prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Washington.
Doug Buchanan, a DC Fire and EMS spokesman, said two of those hurt were seriously injured and were taken to hospitals by ambulance. He said by phone that emergency personnel were called to the residence about 4:30pm Tuesday.
According to witnesses, the brawl erupted when the Turkish presidents security detail attacked protesters carrying the flag of the Kurdish PYD party outside the residence.
"They think they can engage in the same sort of suppression of protest and free speech that they engage in in Turkey," Arthur said. "They stopped us for a few minutes ... but we still stayed and continued to protest Erdogan's tyrannical regime."

(82,849 posts)Which means they probably have diplomatic immunity. From the video clip, the DC cops treated those fine Turkish fellows in their natty suits with a great deal of restraint and respect. Certainly not what we've become accustomed to seeing from the police when confronting out-of-control violent mobs.

(90,767 posts)Got to admit, I was surprised the police didn't draw down on them.

(17,305 posts)Diplomatic immunity should be revoked for these goons. Little doubt that they put the boots to protesters like that in Turkey these days, but, absent any violence committed by demonstrators in America, they should have no right to give chase to anyone who expresses opposition to Erdogan or anything else.

(1,685 posts)I think about 20 of his supporters should be jailed in DC. Nothing against Turkey, but these fuck faces need to do some time, not just for the violence, but for putting good cops in danger. Fuck these idiots.

Now just imagine what it's like to actually live in Turkey under Erdogan's rule.

Shah Mohammad Reza Palahvi visited in Germany in 1967. He was met by far-left protesters who were outraged that Germany would deal with an anti-democratic authoritarian. The protest turned violent when iranian pro-Shah protesters (later speculated to be secret agents) attacked the german protesters with the wooden poles of their protest-signs.
The german protesters got beaten up badly. First the german police did nothing, then they moved in to help the Iranians.
