Animal workers save dog set to be euthanized

http://www.hlntv.com/article/2012/07/06/spca-dog-euthanized-charity-surgery?hpt=hp_t3

The Martinez family had to put their beloved dog down when they couldn't afford emergency care
Their goodbyes so moved the SPCA, they performed the surgery free of charge

The Martinez family had done everything right when it came to taking care of their beloved dog Kayla. They spayed her, kept her up to date on her shots, and treated her as one of the family. But all the planning in the world can't stop a freak accident, and when Kayla injured herself on a stake while playing in their backyard, the Martinezes had to make a heart-wrenching choice.

"I gave her a huge hug and told her I was so sorry I was poor and I hoped she could forgive me," Frank Martinez said. "And then she got off and they took her around the corner, and that was the last I'd seen of her."

The Martinezes thought it was done. They spent the next two weeks mourning for their pet. "We were crying constantly," Frank's wife Francine said. "Everywhere I looked, I would imagine her being there."

Last Friday, the family got a call from the SPCA. Frank's goodbye was so touching, the staff at the SPCA couldn't bear to put Kayla down, and had performed the surgery free of charge. Kayla was alive. It was unbelievable. It was, to the Martinezes nothing short of a miracle.

What if they had gotten a new dog? If this were coming, I wouldn't want it to be a surprise, especially if there are kids involved.

the dog would survive and be in a state where the family could afford to care for it?

plus if it was big surgery the family wouldn't have been able to care for her immediately post-op, if they are poor.

to see her still with her family.

Events like these show a spark of hope for the human animal.

got the care she needed....finally. All credit goes to th SPCA. Maybe the family will realize that dogs don't belong tied to stakes in the back yard. But I doubt it.

I'm a volunteer with a local animal shelter and you wouldn't believe the number of people who are completely ignorant of pet care.

In other words, it's allowed as a temporary measure. But it's considered abuse for someone to keep their dog that way, or keep them tied up regularly or for an extended period of time.

I didn't read the article to know that the stake was the family's and that it was their fault she got injured.

It is also against the law in my county to tie a dog outside for more than 2 hours. In fact, my next door neighbor would tie her dog outside 24/7. Many times. I would have to bang on her door and tell her to take him inside during thunderstorms, as he was terrified. Finally, when it was really cold and that poor little dog was shivering, I called animal control. They came out and cited her. But after a few months, she still leaves him outside in all kinds of weather. I am getting ready to call animal control again because if has been so hot and the dog is outside in the sweltering heat, and half the time he does not have any fresh water.

For all we know from what is said, it could have been a tomato stake. I understand how you feel about tying dogs outside, but let's not jump to conclusions. It just stated that the dog was playing in the yard when it happened.

I think that is what breaks my heart to most. If I heard that, and could afford to pay for the surgery, I would have done it.

I have two dogs... one is super sensitive and feet are out of the question. The other... I play with his paws and toes all the time and he barely raises his head. I raised them both from pups... have no idea what the difference is... But I could be holding Magilla's paw like that any time of day or night and it would be comforting to him.

I'm so glad the Martinezes got their fur critter back!!!!

If treatment is available but unaffordable for the stricken, and life hangs in the balance, how could non-treatment ever be the right choice?

No human or human's companion animal, in need of available treatment, should ever be denied simply because they don't have the funds to cover the price placed on such treatment.
