Penn State abuse report is expected to be 'very tough' on Joe Paterno

A consulting firm's report offering new information about how Joe Paterno and Penn State senior officials responded to an allegation that Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused a boy inside the football team's showers could be made public as early as next week, several sources said Friday, and is expected to be tough on Paterno.

The report is expected to shed new light on administrators' handling of the Sandusky allegations, and also raise questions about Paterno's leadership of Penn State's vaunted football program, according to several people with knowledge of the inquiry's scope.

"Much of the focus will be on the culture of the football program, with findings that go back more than a decade," said a Penn State official briefed on the inquiry, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "It's going to be very tough on Joe (Paterno)."

The long-awaited report, compiled by Freeh Group International Solutions, the consulting firm led by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh, is the culmination of an eight-month investigation that examined whether university policies and culture were contributing factors to a lack of reports and action about abuse that occurred on campus. Investigators interviewed more than 400 people, including Penn State administrators, faculty members, trustees and former coaches, players and staff from Penn State's football team.

I am not a football fan much less a Penn State fan. But, no matter where someones sports allegiance are, the idea that to protect the "program" something like child molestation would go unreported or under reported, that the concern of the molester would out weigh the concerns for the molested is simply disgusting.

I feel if institutes of higher learning would put education over the sports programs, if the fans would be concerned of the multimillion dollar contracts for coaches while the science department is being underfunded then this may not have happened.

I can't believe if this was the head of the biology department no one would have hesitated one millisecond before calling the police and firing the professor.

This was unacceptable and if all the claims are deemed to be true I have no sympathy for Penn State at all.

but it's about POWER, pure and simple. Jerry Sandusky was a wealthy and POWERFUL and popular man who preyed on young boys who were economically disadvantaged. Easy to see who would be believed. From the emails CNN released, I could see administrative butt covering going on. The subtext was ummm ... Sandusky could easily sue us for defamation. Let's play this carefully. Oh, yes, the fact that the power came from mega-money making sports didn't hurt any.

If it were a biology professor, he WOULD be protected IF he were million-dollar grant getter. It's the power.

All of it is sickening. Those boys are scarred for life by this predator.

But also consider the Catholic Church's shameful history with this. The priest had the power, the boys did not. And the culture of rape in our military. Officers not believing the young women, calling them "trouble makers."
