Democrat Christine Pellegrino has defeated her Republican challenger in a New York state special election in a district where President Trump won big in the 2016 presidential race.
Pellegrino, a delegate for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in 2016, defeated Republican challenger Thomas Gargiulo in the District 9 State Assembly Special election.

"Thank you to all the volunteers and supporters who worked so hard during my campaign," Pellegrino posted on her Facebook page. "I look forward to representing the people of the 9th Assembly District!"

Some Democrats applauded the win on Twitter and warned that Republicans are at risk.

In New Hampshire, Democrat Edith DesMarais also won a special election in the town of Wolfeboro, defeating Republican Matthew J. Planche. The special election was held for the seat of Republican Harold Parker, who resigned from the position. DesMarais is the first Democrat to ever be elected to a House seat in Wolfeboro, the Union Leader reported.

(209 posts)I think the key here is that full-throated left-wing populism is a winner, even in deep red territory.

Not sure what your point is - just about all of the huge Bernie supporters running for office are doing so as Democrats.

(209 posts)Are you saying we would've won running a Republican-lite candidate here? I'd love for you to try making that argument with a straight face.
My point was that full-throated populism will win us elections we would otherwise be losing. You haven't addressed that point.
And again, you failed to address my other point - all the people close to Bernie currently running for office are Democrats. Who cares if Bernie himself isn't? He ran as one in the Democratic primary, and came close to beating the candidate everyone was sure had the nomination in the bag (who, by the way, wasn't a lifelong Democrat either).
Populism works these days. Let's not allow the right to have a monopoly on it.

But, yes, I think with Trump's approval numbers where they are we could have won with a candidate who is not advocating those positions.
The issue is that Trump is hated right now and that is opening the door for a lot of Democrats, all over the country, and of many different ideological stripes, to win their elections.

(53,868 posts)The repug brand is in the toilet because of trump.
The Democratic Party is the best option, not independent, not Greens, not Libertarians.
I mean candidates can try running on one of those minor party tickets but success would not be likely against the powerful Dem infrastructure and established brand name.
And no one is talking about any repug-lite anything.

(10,500 posts)That would make no sense. Jeff Merkley is in the Senate. Obviously he has already won.
I didn't hear anything about this woman being a socialist. If she had run a campaign in which she identified herself as such, and she and her opponent debated that, we might have something to discuss in that regards.
We'll never know what would have happened if Bernie had been the Democratic nominee. Even if he runs and wins in 2020 we still won't know what would have happened in 2016, under a different dynamic. But one thing we do know for sure: the Republicans would not have run against him as a good guy who they disagreed with on the issues. By the end of that election they would have provided us with all sorts of reasons why we should believe that Sanders is a truly miserable human being. Same goes for Martin O'Malley if he was the nominee. The GOP is ruthless and they are very good at lying to the American people.
And on edit let me add: Welcome to DU!!
