Gazette opinion: We're pulling our endorsement of Gianforte
THE BILLINGS GAZETTE EDITORIAL BOARD

We're at a loss for words.

And as people who wrangle words on a minute-by-minute basis, that doesn't happen often.

What happens even less — hopefully never again — a Montana candidate assaulting a reporter. While there are still questions left unanswered about GOP House hopeful Greg Gianforte's altercation with Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, eyewitness accounts, law enforcement investigations and records are all shocking, disturbing and without precedent.

That's why The Billings Gazette editorial board is also doing something without precedent: We're rescinding our editorial endorsement of Greg Gianforte.

Missoulian rescinds Gianforte endorsement

Greg Gianforte should not represent Montana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Republican candidate for Congress not only lost the endorsement of this newspaper Wednesday night when, according to witnesses, he put his hands around the throat of a reporter asking him about his health care stance, threw him to the ground and punched him — he should lose the confidence of all Montanans...

He showed Wednesday night that he lacks the experience, brains and abilities to effectively represent Montana in any elected office.

And in case critics say this is just fake news from the liberal media, let us repeat one fact again: The eyewitness account of Gianforte’s actions came from a Fox News reporter.

A thug with a temper that short likely has a prior history of thuggery or other aggressive behavior. Did anybody at the paper research his background?

it probably won't help Quist overcome Gianforte's lead in the polls and those who have yet to vote. I really, really, really, really, really really, really etc. hope it cooks Gianforte's billionaire goose. These rich bastards have to learn that their money can't buy everything, and that they're going to be held accountable for their actions. They never seem to learn those lessons. I wonder why?

"While we have always had serious concerns about Gianforte, which were noted in our endorsement of him, we are formally withdrawing that endorsement in light of Wednesday's developments. We take our endorsements seriously and retracting an endorsement even more seriously, but we cannot in good faith continue to support this candidate.

"We do not want this to be construed as an endorsement for any of Gianforte’s opponents, however. And we encourage all voters to review the information available, listen to their conscience, and vote for the best candidate for Montana at the polls today."

so...these newspapers drop their endorsement of this guy after he commits an overt act of violence.

But, until then, they supported him, even though the GOPee has made clear that in their current iteration they are the party that stands for harming many sectors of society, in particular the most vulnerable and defenseless.

So, committing harm one-on-one is not OK, but committing harm to large numbers of Americans via legislation and policy is A-OK.

Of course, that's the hypocrisy embodied by any one who votes puke these days, especially now that the party has laid bare its vile agenda of serving the wealthy at the expense of everyone else.
