On both CNN and Fox today they have been covering, with increasing levels of hysteria, the "intel leak" that appeared in The NY Times having to do with the suicide bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. This leak involved the release of the suspect's name and close-up photos of possible sections of the bomb that the suspect used in the attack. The English gov has expressed extreme displeasure at the leaking of this info by US sources.
What I noticed about it immediately, and why I am suspicious about the possible source and motivation, is that pro-Trump forces are immediately spinning this story, and doing so ferociously -- claiming that this leak shows that our intel community is deeply flawed and that reforms must be made now as it is damaging our reputation for the handling of intel AND THAT THIS IS WHY THE RUSSIA RELATED LEAKS ARE SO DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLY NOT TRUSTWORTHY. It directs attention to our press and away from the leaker in chief (or at least that is what they seem to hope).
It just seems so convenient, doesn't it? I don't want to be paranoid but I do remember the Rove take-down of Rather and our press needs to be certain that their sources -- and the timing of release of info -- all of it -- needs to be very trustworthy. They need to be expecting a takedown attempt by Priebus et al.

(10,749 posts)I would put money on the fact - which will never be confirmed, this being bizarro America - that the leak came from the WH, or some lackey therein.
The fact that the press reported it is a distraction. This is what the press does. They report stuff they find out. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes they're asked to hold off. But news is news, and the published. That's not the issue.
The issue is that the information was leaked. Let's see. Who else do we know who leaks?
Who leaked the Israeli intelligence to the Russians?
Who leaked US military operations to the Philippines?
Who's leaking inside stories of tension in the WH?
Who leaked the transcript of the phone conversation with Duterte? with Turnbull?

(5,611 posts)the Trump apologists this time. They are pointing out that the U.K. Gov chastised Trump and our gov (not the press) specifically.

(58,785 posts)The WH can spin all it wants, but the British are directing their warnings to the WH specifically. The WH needs to be running scared because the press are reporting this story.

(5,611 posts)representatives (because I think they were trying to spin a story defaming our intel community and the press as they try to suppress the Russia story). CNN is going to discuss it again after the break but this time the emphasis is on how the Trump gov has a problem managing intel (yeah, I'd say so).

(58,785 posts)running around like chicken little looking for a way out in the WH. One'd think they'd have fallen exhausted and just be lying there moaning, waiting for relief from their misery well before this.
