his having retired from a law firm that has represented some of the possible subjects of the investigation. The law firm has over 1000 lawyers, and Mueller himself has never represented anyone involved in the investigation.

Justice Department ethics experts have concluded that newly appointed special counsel Robert S. Mueller III can oversee the investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin during the 2016 presidential election even though his former law firm represents several people who could be caught up in the matter, authorities announced Tuesday.
In an email, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said ethics officials had reviewed the case and determined that Mr. Muellers participation in the matters assigned to him is appropriate. She said the officials had considered Muellers professional obligations and those imposed by government ethics regulations.
Mueller, a former FBI director, had worked for the past three years in the Washington office of WilmerHale, a prominent law firm whose lawyers represent President Trumps former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, Trumps daughter Ivanka and the presidents son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Mueller resigned from the firm after Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein appointed him last week to oversee the investigation of Russian meddling in the election.

(3,813 posts)I've heard how serious he is, a dedicated professional, yada yada yada. But remember when he was appointed? (September 4, 2001 I believe) And by whom? (George Dubya B*sh)
Look, I don't want to derail this conversation into Creative Speculation territory, but is a Republican-appointed law officer really who we want on this job? And not just any Republican, but the administration that lied us into a $1 Trillion war of choice that exacerbated just about every situation across the Middle East?
Plus, yes, we should talk about Mueller's role in the official 9/11 conspiracy theory that 19 guys with box cutters were able to defeat all North American Air Defenses for a period of hours, such that the asymmetric forces of two passenger jets hitting two buildings somehow managed to collapse THREE buildings (WTC 1, WTC 2, & WTC 7) neatly into their own footprints.
Flame away if you'd like, but I am not optimistic.

(3,813 posts)Maybe Mueller will nail Trump and leave us with Pence? When we know that Pence/Ryan/McConnell/etc. are all in on the corruption...
I don't honestly know. I really hope that you're right and I am the one who is off-base here.

(14,274 posts)I'm thinking Trump/Pence/Ryan/McConnell/ are all going down. I laughed at President Hatch at first, but it makes sense.

(3,813 posts)Heck, we ARE faring worse than Hatch right now.
I really hope you are right that Trump/Pence/Ryan/McConnell/ are all going down. To me (and most of us here at DU), it's clear as day that they have all conspired together.

(108,980 posts)The Special Prosecutor can only prosecute statutory crimes, and has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt.
So even the most dogged prosecutor might come up short, depending on what they find. But the standard for impeachment is different -- broader and less legalistic. That's what an Independent Commission is for.
